Job description

Company Description: Beyond the Bell Academy is a youth-focused non profit afterschool organization dedicated to supporting underserved high schoolers through educational enrichment and positive development opportunities outside of traditional school hours. Based in Washington DC, the Academy offers structured programs that promote financial literacy, college readiness, workplace readiness, and civic/community service engagement to best prepare and expose high schoolers to higher education.

The organization partners with families, schools, and community stakeholders to create a safe and engaging environment for youth. Team members collaborate to design age-appropriate activities and mentorship experiences that help participants build confidence and prepare for future success beyond the last sound of their school bell.

Role Description: The Youth Development Intern is a part-time UNPAID position, on-site role based in Washington DC, supporting the delivery of youth programs and activities. On a day-to-day basis, the intern assists with leading small-group sessions, homework and enrichment activities that foster social, emotional and academic growth. Mentors are expected to build trustworthy relationships with students and be ideal role models as they prepare to enter the next chapter of their lives. Additionally, mentors are responsible for monitoring attendance and student records. The Youth Development Intern will work closely with staff to support special events, contribute ideas for new activities, and participate in team meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate interest in youth development, education, or community-based work, with a commitment to supporting young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong communication skills between students and staff members.
  • Organizational and time-management abilities, with capacity to handle multiple tasks, follow schedules, and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic facilitation and group management skills, including comfort leading activities, enforcing guidelines, and contributing to a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset, with willingness to take initiative and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Reliability and professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, and adherence to program policies and safeguards for working with youth.
  • Current enrollment in or completion of a postsecondary program in education, social work, psychology, youth development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience working or volunteering with children or adolescents in schools, camps, after-school programs, or community organizations is a plus.
