About BPI Medical

BPI Medical is a leading provider of medical instrument and endoscope repair services. Founded in 1976 in Fife, Washington, we serve hospitals, surgery centers, and health systems across all 48 contiguous states with flexible endoscope repair, rigid endoscope repair, surgical instrument repair, power equipment repair, and mobile on-site service. We operate as an ISO 13485:2016 certified facility and are trusted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, MultiCare Health System, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and other anchor health systems to keep critical surgical and diagnostic equipment in service.

Our work directly supports patient care: every device that comes through our facility goes back into service, often the same week, ready for the next procedure. We are growing — significantly — and we are investing in the people, systems, and processes that will let us keep delivering on what has been our standard since 1976: it has to be right, and it has to be fast, no exceptions.

The Role

As a Surgical Instrument Repair Technician at BPI Medical, you bring hand-held surgical instruments — scissors, forceps, needle holders, retractors, clamps, and specialty instruments — back to OEM-equivalent cutting performance and patient-safety condition. The instruments you repair go back into ORs at hospitals, surgery centers, and health systems we've served since 1976, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, MultiCare Health System, and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. You own each instrument from the bench through final QA release, signing the records that protect the patient on the other end.

What You'll Do
  • Sharpen, repair, and restore handheld surgical instruments — scissors (Mayo, Metzenbaum, iris, plastic, bandage), forceps, needle holders, retractors, clamps, and hemostats.
  • Diagnose and correct tipalignment, jawocclusion, hinge, and ratchet defects without overgrinding or removing functional material.
  • Replace tungstencarbide inserts, rebuild box locks and ratchets, and perform surface refinishing on stainlessgrade instruments.
  • Verify your work against OEM and ASTM F899 acceptance criteria using sharpening systems, alignment fixtures, and testcut media.
  • Document every step to ISO 13485 traceability standards.
  • As a senior technician, own complex specialty repairs (microsurgical, ophthalmic, dental, podiatric), mentor newer technicians, and serve as the line's technical reference.
  • What You Bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • ANY ONE of the following: completion of a biomedical, machinist/precisionmachining, mechanical, jewelry/watchmaking, cutlery, or related program; two or more years of surgical instrument, machinist, or precisiontool repair experience; U.S. Military training in a relevant medical equipment, dental equipment, or precision MOS; or completion of a recognized surgical instrument or biomedical apprenticeship program.
  • Manual dexterity, steady hands, and corrected vision sufficient for sharpening and miniaturetip alignment.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs unassisted; able to work an assigned shift onsite in Fife, WA.
  • U.S. work authorization.
  • Nice to Have
  • OEM or tradeassociation sharpening and repair training.
  • CRCST, IAHCSMM/HSPA Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), BMET, or ISO 13485:2016 internal auditor credential.
  • Familiarity with ASTM F899 stainlessgrade requirements and AAMI ST79 reprocessing context.
  • Specialty background — microsurgical, ophthalmic, dental, or podiatric instrumentation.
  • Prior experience in an ISO 13485 or FDA 21 CFR Part 820 environment.
  • Benefits

BPI Medical offers a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
  • Life insurance and short and longterm disability coverage
  • Work Environment & Physical Demands

On-site, full-time at BPI Medical's repair facility in Fife, WA. Standard 8-hour day shift with occasional voluntary overtime. Bench and sharpening-station work — sustained sitting, fine-motor work, and corrected-vision precision required. Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs and occasional lifting up to 35 lbs unassisted (50 lbs with assistance). PPE provided and required: impact-rated safety eyewear, nitrile gloves, lab coat or repair smock, hearing protection at sharpening stations. Exposure to grinding particulate (with extraction), polishing compounds, and minor residual bioburden on inbound instruments prior to decontamination clearance. No travel.

BPI Medical is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.
