Employment relationship: This is a Bay Systems position assigned to support Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The selected candidate will be employed by Bay Systems and will work onsite at the LBNL campus in Berkeley.

About the opportunity

Bay Systems is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Cable Plant and related electrical infrastructure at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The role supports the design, planning, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical and cable plant systems in a complex scientific facility.

You will work closely with subsystem leads, engineers, designers, technicians, contractors, operations personnel, and other project stakeholders to develop practical solutions, maintain accurate technical documentation, and deliver work consistent with applicable National Electrical Code (NEC), LBNL, ALS, and ALS-U requirements.

What you will do

•    Support the design and engineering of AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray and raceway systems, grounding, and related infrastructure.

•    Develop and maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, rack and equipment layouts, cable routing plans, parts lists, bills of materials, specifications, interface documents, and installation work instructions.

•    Use AutoCAD, 3D CAD, BIM, and electrical engineering tools to develop, evaluate, and maintain engineering designs.

•    Evaluate field conditions, review contractor and subcontractor technical work, respond to field questions, and help verify installations against approved designs, technical requirements, and applicable codes.

•    Support installation readiness, inspections, material planning, procurement, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.

•    Participate in electrical design reviews, multidisciplinary technical reviews, field reviews, interface coordination, and issue-resolution activities.

•    Prepare field markups, as-built information, testing records, commissioning documentation, and other configuration-controlled engineering records.

•    Perform work in accordance with applicable laboratory environment, health and safety, electrical safety, cybersecurity, site-access, and training requirements.

Required qualifications

•    Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field plus at least two years of related experience; master's degree plus at least one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•    Experience with electrical, electronics, or facility system design and implementation, including development and interpretation of schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, cable routing plans, and bills of materials.

•    Working knowledge of NEC requirements applicable to AC distribution and electrical equipment installation.

•    Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Revit or comparable 3D CAD software, and E-CAD tools used for schematic capture, electrical layout, simulation, or design for manufacture.

•    Ability to develop practical engineering solutions, manage multiple assignments, and meet project deadlines.

•    Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively across engineering and technical disciplines.

•    Ability to perform required onsite field activities and a demonstrated commitment to safe work execution.

Preferred qualifications

•    Five or more years of related electrical engineering experience, including experience independently leading design and implementation for complex systems.

•    Significant experience with electrical distribution, equipment installation, cabling, cable routing, cable tray and raceway systems, grounding, or experimental electrical systems.

•    Advanced knowledge of NEC and electrical safety requirements, including NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.

•    Experience with Revit, BIM, multidisciplinary 3D design coordination, SKM, ETAP, or Creo Parametric.

•    Experience leading contractor or subcontractor electrical work and supporting integration, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, procurement, cost, schedule, or installation execution.

•    Experience in a research laboratory, national laboratory, particle accelerator, industrial facility, DOE environment, or comparably complex technical setting.

•    Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, especially with power electronics or power supply experience; EIT certification; or a PE license.

Work environment and assignment details

•    Primary worksite: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California.

•    Work arrangement: Full-time and onsite; field activity may include access to ALS accelerator areas and other laboratory or project spaces.

•    Assignment term: Initial one-year period with the potential for two additional one-year extensions.

•    Travel: Routine travel is not anticipated. Any travel would require advance authorization.

•    Site requirements: Completion and maintenance of applicable badging, safety, technical, security, cybersecurity, and access training.

How to apply

Submit your resume and a brief summary describing your experience with electrical distribution, cable plant infrastructure, CAD/BIM tools, field installation support, and commissioning. Please highlight any experience in research facilities, particle accelerators, national laboratories, DOE projects, or similarly complex environments.
