Job description

The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a senior water resources engineer to join our growing Salt Lake City team. In this role, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to provide project and/or task management, technical leadership, and engineering support for a diverse range of water resources projects. Project work may involve hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, dam safety and reservoir systems, stormwater planning and flood control, and preparation of technical reports, plans, and specifications.
The ideal candidate for this position has strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, proven task or project management skills, and a willingness to work cooperatively with project team members in a high-energy environment that encourages self-initiative.
Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Technical knowledge: water resources challenges such as precipitation and flooding data analysis, urban and rural hydrologic analysis, open channel and pipe flow analysis, hydraulic structures, bank stabilization and stream restoration, floodplain analysis and mapping, analysis of water supply and aquifer storage, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling approaches, and commonly used software.
  • Reporting and permitting: prepare technical reports, plans, and specifications and work with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials.
  • Project and task management: lead project teams in planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to project team members and clients.
  • Client relationships: develop and maintain client relationships; develop proposals and perform business development activities.

About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Salt Lake City, Utah, office.
  • Work environment: ability to work in an office environment. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in civil/environmental engineering with emphasis on water resources.
  • Experience: 15 years of related water resources engineering experience with a focus on hydrology and hydraulics.
    • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling approaches and commonly used software.
    • Experience with proposal development, client management, and business development.
  • Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)
  • Master's degree or PhD in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, and/or water quality.
  • 16+ years of water resources engineering experience with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, and/or water quality.
  • Experience with Western water rights.

Compensation: anticipated range of $115,000-$130,000/year. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance
