For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has served as a vital provider of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are proud to host the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, as well as being the sole hospital in the area equipped with LIFE STAR helicopter services. Our mission is to deliver and coordinate a comprehensive range of high-quality healthcare aimed at enhancing the health of our communities.


Position Overview:


Our nursing staff operates within collaborative settings alongside robust interdisciplinary teams, emphasizing a patient-centered care approach in a diverse work environment. Under the guidance and general oversight of the Nurse Manager, registered nurses apply evidence-based practices in alignment with the State Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and directives from the medical team. Utilizing their knowledge and skills, registered nurses develop care plans that address the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and educational needs of patients and their families.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
Experience: At least one (1) year of experience or successful completion of the Nurse Residency Program at Backus Hospital.
License and Certification: Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in good standing in the State of Connecticut. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain department-specific certifications.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in the relevant clinical area.
License and Certification: Certification in the clinical specialty area. CNOR certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Fundamental understanding of nursing principles and practices. Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions. Effective communication skills to relay technical or complex information and instructions. Strong interpersonal abilities to interact with departments, staff, physicians, managers, and patients. Capacity to manage multiple priorities, demonstrate flexibility, and work collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment. Commitment to exceptional customer service. Basic computer skills for data entry and retrieval.

Requires a high level of analytical ability to gather and interpret information from various sources. Capable of taking appropriate actions in response to changes, challenges, problems, and emergency situations. Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
