Safety Inspector & Instructor

Borges Logistics Inc. is seeking an experienced, proactive, and analytical Safety Compliance & Driver Training Specialist to join our Safety Department.

This is not a position for someone who simply follows established safety procedures or reacts to violations after they occur.

We are looking for a transportation safety professional who can identify risks, analyze trends, investigate root causes, develop preventive and corrective strategies, coach drivers, and help continuously improve our overall Safety & Compliance Program.

The successful candidate will work closely with Safety Management and play an active role in developing new strategies and programs designed to reduce driver-related risk, improve DOT inspection performance, strengthen regulatory compliance, and improve overall fleet safety.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Analysis & Prevention

• Analyze DOT inspections, violations, Out-of-Service events, ELD/HOS issues, equipment violations, driver behavior, and other safety data.
• Identify recurring trends, patterns, and emerging areas of risk.
• Develop and recommend preventive strategies before issues result in violations, accidents, or negative DOT inspections.
• Create targeted initiatives addressing areas such as speeding, vehicle condition, lights, brakes, tires, ELD/HOS compliance, inspection readiness, English proficiency, and driver behavior.
• Monitor implemented strategies and determine whether they are producing measurable improvements.

Corrective Action & Root-Cause Analysis

• Investigate negative DOT inspections, violations, incidents, and recurring compliance problems.
• Determine the underlying cause of safety issues—not simply what happened.
• Identify whether problems originate from driver behavior, training deficiencies, equipment condition, operational procedures, communication gaps, or broader systemic issues.
• Develop corrective action plans and recommend appropriate training, monitoring, procedural changes, warnings, disciplinary action, or other interventions.
• Follow up and evaluate whether corrective measures successfully prevent recurrence.

Driver Training & Coaching

• Conduct direct coaching with drivers regarding DOT requirements, company policies, roadside inspections, safe operating practices, and identified performance issues.
• Provide targeted education following violations or negative inspections.
• Reinforce proper pre-trip and post-trip inspection procedures.
• Ensure drivers understand why violations occurred and how to prevent them from happening again.
• Document coaching, corrective actions, and follow-up.

High-Risk Driver Management

• Identify drivers demonstrating recurring violations, unsafe behavior, or poor inspection performance.
• Establish improvement expectations and monitor performance following corrective action.
• Recommend warnings or disciplinary action when appropriate.
• Escalate drivers who fail to improve and recommend termination when continued behavior represents an unacceptable safety or compliance risk.

In-Office Inspections & Roadside Inspections with OOS

• Develop prevention campaigns based on inspection data.
• Conduct pre-employment and quarterly inspections of trucks and trailers at our Meldey office.
• Identify visible defects and common DOT violations before equipment encounters a roadside inspection.
• Use inspection findings to improve driver education and future preventive programs.
• Analyze positive and negative roadside inspection results to identify recurring violation categories.

Safety Strategy & Continuous Improvement

A major part of this position is developing better systems—not simply operating existing ones.

The specialist will work directly with Safety Management to:

• Bring forward new safety ideas and recommendations.
• Evaluate and challenge existing processes when better solutions are available.
• Help develop new safety programs, procedures, tracking systems, training initiatives, and preventive controls.
• Establish measurable objectives for safety initiatives.
• Evaluate results and recommend changes when programs are not producing the expected improvement.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in the trucking or transportation industry is required.
• Strong understanding of DOT safety and compliance requirements.
• Knowledge of truck and trailer equipment and common roadside inspection violations.
• Familiarity with FMCSA regulations, DOT inspections, ELD/HOS compliance, and driver safety programs is highly preferred.
• Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to recognize patterns and convert observations into practical solutions.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively coach and educate professional drivers.
• Ability to independently develop and propose new ideas.
• Strong documentation and follow-up skills.
• Comfortable working directly with Safety Management to develop and implement new programs.
• Reefer equipment knowledge or experience is a plus, but not required.
