BJ is led by Rosh Kehilah and Senior Rabbi Felicia Sol and Executive Director Steven Melzer. The organization has an annual operating budget of $13 million, with approximately 80% from contributed revenue, and a staff of approximately 50 full‑time and 10 part‑time employees.

Job Overview

You are someone who can see the big picture and get the work done. You are a creative, highly organized digital communications professional who knows how to shape content strategy, manage day-to-day execution, and turn meaningful moments into compelling digital stories.

You understand that not every piece of content belongs everywhere. You know how to differentiate by platform, audience, tone, and format. You have good instincts about when something should become a short video, a still photo, a carousel, a GIF, a meme, a quote graphic, or a simple but well-written post.

As part of BJ’s Communications team and reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, the Social Media and Communications Manager will help lead BJ’s digital presence across social media, email, livestream, website, and event communications in close collaboration with BJ’s rabbinic and program teams. This role is both strategic and hands‑on: the right person will bring ideas, judgment, and initiative, while also drafting posts, building emails, updating the website, creating registrations, and capturing content on site when needed.

This person will manage BJ’s social media channels, develop creative content ideas, and help generate short-form digital content from BJ’s programs, services, and livestreams, including weekly Divrei Torah from BJ’s rabbis, music from services, community and volunteer gatherings, and other expressions of BJ’s spiritual and communal life.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Social Media & Content Creation

• Channel Management: Plan, draft, schedule, engage, and track performance across all BJ social media channels.
• Content Production: Repurpose livestreams and event footage into engaging short-form content, including clips of weekly sermons and teachings (Divrei Torah), music from services, and volunteer gatherings.
• On‑Site Capture: Attend services, programs, and community moments as needed to capture high-quality photos, videos, and quotes.
• Trend Monitoring: Monitor digital communications trends and suggest thoughtful ways BJ can continue to grow its reach and engagement.

Email, Website & Event Communications

• Email Marketing: Draft, build, test, and deploy community emails using Mailchimp.
• Website Management: Implement website updates (WordPress) including page edits, copy updates, forms, and image changes.
• Event Marketing: Build event registration pages, generate attendee reports, and ensure all digital event copy is clear, accurate, and user‑friendly.
• Team Collaboration: Partner with spiritual leaders, program staff, and administrative colleagues to gather information and execute communication needs.
• Department Support: Assist the Director and Associate Director of Communications on larger organizational campaigns and priorities.
• Workflow Tracking: Maintain strict tracking of project details, deadlines, approvals, publishing calendars, and cross‑platform communication needs.
• Quality Control: Maintain high standards for proofreading, accuracy, accessibility, and organizational alignment under quick turnarounds.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

• Experience: 4+ years of experience in digital communications, social media marketing, or nonprofit communications. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
• Social Media Management: Proven track record managing social media channels for an organization, brand, nonprofit, community, or public‑facing institution.
• Communication Skills: Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop creative content ideas and execute them across digital platforms.
• Video & Tech Skills: Ability to shoot basic mobile footage and edit short‑form video content (using tools like Opus Clip or CapCut). Familiarity with some or all of the following: WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and Airtable.
• Standards & AI: High standards for accuracy, accessibility, and discretion, including the responsible use of AI tools with human review and full editorial ownership at every step.
• Work Style: A proactive, flexible self‑starter who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, successfully manages multiple deadlines, and seamlessly balances strategic thinking with hands‑on execution.
• Scheduling Flexibility: Willingness to adjust hours based on seasonal needs, including occasional evenings, weekends, and during the High Holy Days.
• Cultural Context: Jewish knowledge or familiarity with Jewish communal life is helpful, but not required.

The BJ campus includes the Sanctuary building on 257 West 88th Street and the Community House on 270 West 89th Street, which are connected at the ground level.

Staff schedules are hybrid, with 3-4 in‑office days per week. This position will occasionally require evening, holiday, or weekend work during select periods of the year, depending on team needs and organizational priorities.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full‑time exempt position with a salary range of $68,000 to $72,000. BJ offers highly subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance policies, as well as vacation and sick days, over 20 paid (National and Jewish) holidays, a 403b retirement plan, and many other benefits.
