Job description

Job Summary
The New York Army National Guard is accepting applications for individuals interested in enlisting for military service. This is a paid military enlistment opportunity and is not a civilian position.

As an enlisted Soldier in the Army National Guard, you will serve your community, your state, and your country while receiving military training, leadership development, and career opportunities. After completing enlistment and initial training, Soldiers may qualify for a variety of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) based on their qualifications, available positions, and the needs of the Army National Guard.

What You'll Do

Following enlistment and successful completion of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, Soldiers may:

  • Participate in training exercises and military operations.
  • Support state emergency response efforts during natural disasters and other emergencies when activated.
  • Assist with homeland security and community support missions as authorized.
  • Operate and maintain military equipment.
  • Develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Receive ongoing professional and technical training throughout military service.
  • Serve one weekend each month and approximately two weeks each year, unless mobilized or activated for additional duty.

Military Career Opportunities

After enlistment and successful completion of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, qualified Soldiers may have the opportunity to train in one of many career fields based on their qualifications, available positions, ASVAB scores, and the needs of the Army National Guard.

  • Administration – Manage personnel records, coordinate office operations, process military correspondence, and provide administrative support to keep units running efficiently.
  • Aviation – Support Army aviation operations by maintaining aircraft, assisting flight operations, fueling aircraft, or serving in aviation support roles.
  • Communications – Install, operate, and maintain secure voice, radio, satellite, and computer communication systems that keep military units connected during training and missions.
  • Cyber Operations – Help defend military networks, monitor cybersecurity systems, and support information assurance and cyber defense operations.
  • Engineering – Build and repair roads, bridges, facilities, and infrastructure while supporting construction, combat engineering, and disaster response missions.
  • Healthcare – Provide medical support to Soldiers through emergency care, patient treatment, preventative medicine, dental services, behavioral health, and other healthcare specialties.
  • Human Resources – Assist with personnel management, payroll, benefits administration, career records, and support services for Soldiers and their families.
  • Information Technology – Maintain computer networks, troubleshoot hardware and software systems, manage servers, and provide technical support for military operations.
  • Intelligence – Gather, analyze, and distribute information that helps commanders make informed decisions during training, homeland response, and military operations.
  • Logistics – Coordinate the movement of personnel, equipment, supplies, and resources to ensure units have what they need to accomplish their missions.
  • Military Police – Support law enforcement, security operations, traffic control, and force protection while helping maintain safety and security on military installations and during operations.
  • Mechanics – Inspect, repair, and maintain military vehicles, generators, aircraft components, and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Supply – Manage military inventory, issue equipment, maintain accountability of property, and oversee warehouse and distribution operations.
  • Transportation – Operate military vehicles and coordinate the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies by ground or other transportation methods in support of military missions.

Career assignments are based on individual qualifications, ASVAB scores, medical eligibility, available positions, successful completion of required military training, and the needs of the New York Army National Guard.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be willing to enlist in the New York Army National Guard.
  • Meet U.S. Army enlistment eligibility requirements.
  • Be between 17 and 35 years old (17-year-old applicants require parental consent).
  • Be a U.S. citizen or otherwise legally eligible to enlist under current U.S. Army regulations.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (some opportunities may have additional education requirements).
  • Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), medical examination, and physical fitness standards required for military service.
  • Meet moral and background eligibility standards.

Enlistment Commitment

This position requires a military enlistment commitment, which is typically 8 years in the U.S. Army National Guard, consisting of a combination of active drilling status and/or Individual Ready Reserve, depending on the enlistment contract.
