What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is a Full Stack Engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

Job description

Airtable is the no-code app platform that empowers people closest to the work to accelerate their most critical business processes. More than 500,000 organizations, including 80% of the Fortune 100, rely on Airtable to transform how work gets done.

Airtable’s mission is to bring the power of computing and software development to everyone. We are developing a powerful and extensible platform that our customers can leverage to solve a variety of different problems and workflows. We’ve seen our most sophisticated customers use the product to run global processes across thousands of employees, coordinate precision manufacturing pipelines, and consolidate previously siloed mission-critical data into a single source of truth. The complexity of these use cases requires us to be extremely thoughtful about how we design and implement new functionality in the product and make sure it’s both easy to use and comprehend for our customers and maintainable for us.

As a Full-Stack, Backend engineer at Airtable, you will have the opportunity to work with customers to deeply understand their needs and workflows. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners across product management, design, research and data science to create innovative new features that enable our customers to do their best work. You will be responsible for owning and executing the end-to-end implementation of these new features that will contribute to making our toolkit even more powerful and successful.

We currently have openings on:

  • The Monetization Team (Full-Stack/BE) is a high-impact team focused on driving user engagement and revenue across Airtable’s core surfaces, including sharing, pricing, and payments. Engineers on this team build polished, user-facing features, run experiments that shape product direction, and maintain the systems that power billing and purchasing. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Data, leverage AI to personalize the user journey, and play a key role in helping users discover and unlock the full value of Airtable.

  • The Platform Interoperability Team (Full-Stack/BE) builds the systems that allow agents, integrations, and connected workflows to interact with Airtable as a platform. As AI agents become a primary interface for how work gets done, we're ensuring Airtable is a first-class participant in that ecosystem. This team's mission is to make Airtable the most capable and well-connected platform in the agentic ecosystem. We're building the infrastructure that lets humans and agents alike treat Airtable as a source of truth they can reliably act on, whether through direct integrations, AI-powered workflows, or large-scale data operations.

Please note: while we employ a hybrid working model at Airtable (flexible in working from the office or elsewhere), we are only hiring in the following locations at this time:

  • Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and are open to coming into our office (Embarcadero) at least ~2-3 times/week for team collaboration

  • Based in New York City and are open to coming into our office (Soho) at least ~2-3 times/week for team collaboration

  • Based remotely in the greater Seattle area

What you'll do

  • Design and build systems that dramatically increase the scalability and performance of all applications built on Airtable, to earn the trust of our customers through predictable, reliable, and thoughtful interactions.

  • Work at the deep backend of the Airtable software stack within the Enterprise Product portion of the org, just above the Infrastructure org.

  • Partner with product managers, designers, and data scientists to understand the needs of potential users and build a product that unlocks their potential.

  • Work alongside and learn from a talented group of engineers with a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds.

Who you are

  • You have 8+ years of industry experience with modern systems development, ideally database internals development.

  • You are interested in programming in TypeScript and Rust.

  • You are excited by a product-oriented backend role, i.e. not pure Infrastructure.

  • You have a good understanding of modern web technologies and large-scale web application architecture.

  • You have a background in computer science or a related field.

  • You believe the best product is the one that helps users accomplish their goals while growing the business.

  • You take a thoughtful approach to decision making; knowing when to move fast and when to do things right.

  • You have strong convictions, weakly held and assume validation and iteration are a given to produce the best results.

  • You show strong ownership instincts and sweat the details.

  • You are currently based and/or will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area
