Staff Accountant

JOB SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant supports the University's financial operations by performing a range of accounting functions, including but not limited to, preparing/entering journal entries, reconciling general ledger accounts, analyzing financial data, reviewing fixed asset additions and related depreciation, and assisting in month end closings and year-end audits.  This role ensures accurate and timely processing of financial transactions in compliance with the University's policies and applicable accounting guidance.

SALARY INFORMATION:

In compliance with New York's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager of Accounting

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

1. Prepare routine and recurring journal entries, including accruals, adjustments, and reclassifications to ensure accurate monthly and annual financial reporting.

2. Prepare monthly reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts and recommend adjustments as needed.

3. Serve as a backup for the senior accountant in areas such as bank reconciliation, meal plan accounting, student medical charges, tuition insurance and course materials bundle reconciliations.

4. Assist in reviewing monthly fixed asset additions and depreciation, and prepare the related journal entries.

5. Assist in monitoring fund balances, restricted accounts and project related transactions as needed.

6. Support month-end and year-end closing processes.

7. Assist with annual audit preparation, including responding to auditor requests and gathering required data.

8. Participate in the review and improvement of accounting procedures, processes and internal controls.

9. Assist with researching accounting issues and documenting conclusions in accordance with established accounting policies.

10. Work with outside partners to prepare and submit for payment all income share reconciliations and payments, as per contacts.

11. Performed other related duties and ad hoc projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

1. Ability to work efficiently and accurately with a strong attention to detail.

2. Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc.

3. Ability to embrace change and be flexible with potential process changes.

4. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

6. Knowledge of Accounting principles and procedures.

7. Strong computer skills for using Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite and Email.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting is required.

2. One to three years of professional accounting experience is required.

3. Familiarity with GAAP and standard accounting procedures.
