Position Description

Parent to Parent coordinators help families of youth with disabilities connect, support, and grow. Duties include: 

• Peer matching 
• Emotional support 
• Resource navigation 

This position is full-time and non-exempt.  

The Parent to Parent (P2P) coordinator is responsible for day-to-day operations of The Arc of King County’s P2P program. The P2P coordinator provides culturally responsive peer support to parents who have children up to age 21 with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (IDD). Duties include hosting informal P2P support groups, meetings and program-related workshops/trainings, as well as some 1:1 information and referral and “Helping Parent” outreach activities. This position must be filled by a parent or close family member of a person with a disability or special health care needs

• Other Key Relationships: Director of Information and Family Support, all members of The Arc’s Outreach and Advocacy Team

Essential Functions

• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of services and resources, including Early Supports for Infants and Toddlers, K-12 special education services, and long-term care waiver services through DHSH DDA 
• Accurately responds to and strives to resolve in a timely manner all information and referral questions and/or emotional support requests that come through in-person events or office visits, email, phone, and social media connections.  
• Under supervision, coordinates the P2P program, which includes developing program plans and documenting program activities in order to ensure quality service delivery and achievement of program outcomes. Oversee moderation of The Arc of King County’s online Facebook P2P Groups and P2P Google Groups. 
• Make program activities accessible to different cultural communities in terms of disability, language, culture, location, and other cultural considerations by utilizing The Arc of King County’s diverse staff, and/or interpreters (over the phone or in person). 
• Program activities include but are not limited to:  
  • Deliver Parent to Parent program essentials, including hosting at least one Helping Parent training per year, one IEP Parent Partner training per year, making and supporting IEP Parent Partner and Helping Parent matches, and attending regular P2P WA meetings and activities. 
  • Provide emotional and peer support to parents of children with IDD and special healthcare needs. 
  • Support and maintain a strong working relationship with the active Helping Parent and IEP Parent Partner pool of volunteers. 
  • Coordinating P2P program-related workshops/trainings, social events, and informal support groups 
• Attend and host resource fairs, presentations, and educational workshops where information about The Arc of King County and IDD resources are shared. 
• Critically evaluate program activities for effectiveness and regularly consult with supervisor. 
• Proactively participate in team, department and agency meetings to achieve program goals. 
• Maintains good relationships with community stakeholders including groups identified by supervisor. 
• Ensures program documentation and promotional materials are up to date. Including on-going timely, accurate Salesforce data entry.  
• Partner with the Advocacy Team to share educational resources and civic engagement opportunities.

• Support the agency’s efforts to undo ableism and institutional racism, build cultural competence, and serve an increasingly diverse population 
• Collaborate across teams and participate in staff events 
• Be flexible and courteous with clients, partners, and community leaders

Qualifications

 Experience

• Per contract requirement the position must be filled by a parent or close family member of a person with a disability or special health care needs

Skills:  

• Demonstrated communication skills, including: 
• The ability to facilitate meetings and support people with diverse viewpoints and experiences. 
• The ability to process and share information in a variety of formats. For example, in conversation, through writing, and with visuals 
• The ability to explain things in plain language, so people with cognitive disabilities or those who do not speak English as a first language understand 
• Demonstrated community outreach and engagement  

Tech Proficiency:

• Database use (Salesforce)
• Simple graphic design for event flyers (Canva)
• Zoom webinar platform
• Microsoft Office Suite 

Knowledge:  

• Must be familiar with the services people with disabilities rely on, such as Medicaid long-term care, public education, low-income housing, and other social services 
• Must be able to continually update and expand knowledge of disability-related services 

Non-negotiable qualifications: 

• Ability to learn and implement state mandatory reporting requirements  
• Ability to learn and follow all policies and complete all required safety and equity training  
• Complete data entry and event documentation by required deadlines  
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse economic, ethnic, and social backgrounds 
• Ability to communicate in a professional manner 

Physical and Other Requirements

• Ability to pass a criminal background check.
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or an approved accommodation request is required prior to starting work.
• Ability to work in an open office environment with or without accommodation.
• Ability to use phone, email, and internet with ease.
• Ability to travel anywhere in King County as needed (if driving, must have a WA driver’s license and car insurance; if not driving, ability to be punctual when traveling anywhere in King County)
• Work hours typically occur between 8:30-4:30 Monday-Friday with some flexibility.
• Requires some evening and weekend work with advanced notice/planning.

Hours/Salary/Benefits

• This is a full-time non-exempt position.
• This position is eligible for The Arc of King County’s employee benefits package which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(K), EAP, Orca card, paid holidays, paid personal leave, and more.
• Hourly Wage 26.00/hour
