Volunteer Animal Shelter Assistant

Role Summary

Support the daily care and well-being of shelter dogs and cats by providing food, water, clean living spaces, exercise, socialization, and basic assistance to shelter staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and serve meals according to each animal's feeding schedule and dietary needs.
• Refill water bowls and ensure animals always have access to clean water.
• Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, litter boxes, bedding, bowls, and common areas.
• Walk dogs and provide safe exercise, play, and socialization.
• Spend time with cats through gentle handling, play, grooming, and enrichment.
• Observe animals for changes in behavior, appetite, or health and report concerns to staff.
• Restock food, cleaning supplies, bedding, and other animal-care materials.
• Follow shelter procedures for hygiene, animal handling, and workplace safety.
• Assist staff and visitors as needed while maintaining a calm, compassionate environment.

Qualifications

• Comfortable working with dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, and temperaments.
• Dependable, patient, compassionate, and able to follow instructions.
• Willing to perform physical tasks, including standing, bending, lifting supplies, and cleaning.
• Able to work around animal hair, odors, noise, and cleaning products.
• Previous animal-care experience is helpful but not required. Training is provided.
