1X Technologies AS Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and familiarity with industry standards or relevant certifications (like a Professional Engineer license) are common requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborative and multidisciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, innovative, and efficient engineering solutions that meet project and client needs.

What are common interdisciplinary collaborations for Mechanical Engineers in a typical project setting?

Mechanical Engineers often work closely with professionals from other disciplines such as electrical engineers, software developers, and industrial designers, especially when developing complex products or machinery. Collaboration is essential for integrating mechanical systems with electronics and software, ensuring functionality, safety, and efficiency. These interactions usually involve regular team meetings, joint problem-solving sessions, and coordinated testing to achieve project goals. Being comfortable working in cross-functional teams can significantly enhance your success and contribute to innovative solutions.

What does a Mechanical Engineer do?

A Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, builds, and tests mechanical devices such as engines, machines, and tools. They use principles of physics and mathematics to solve engineering problems and improve existing products. Mechanical Engineers can work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Their responsibilities often include creating blueprints, analyzing data, and collaborating with other engineers or professionals to ensure projects meet safety and quality standards.

What type of jobs do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems such as engines, HVAC systems, manufacturing equipment, and robotics. They often work in industries like automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, utilizing skills in CAD software, thermodynamics, and materials science to solve engineering problems. Their roles may involve research, project management, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

Job description

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.
As a Mechanical Engineers at 1X Technologies you will focus on designing, building, and validating mechanical subsystems for advanced robotics and automation products. You will own components from concept through production, with emphasis on tendon mechanisms. Partnering closely with design, testing, and manufacturing teams, you'll deliver reliable, serviceable designs and documentation that meet performance, safety, and cost targets in a fast-paced R&D-to-production environment.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for robotic/automation platforms.
  • Create rope/tendon-driven, routing, anchoring, and tensioning solutions.
  • Comfortable with 3D CAD models, drawings, and GD&T
  • Perform hand calculations and basic FEA to validate strength, stiffness, fatigue, and vibration.
  • Build prototypes, run bench and system-level tests, and iterate based on data.
  • Drive DFM/DFA reviews with suppliers and internal manufacturing partners.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues and improve reliability.

About You
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience in robotics, aerospace, automotive, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience with rope/cable/tendon mechanisms (selection, terminations, wear).
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, OnShape, NX) and 2D drawing creation.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and fits/fasteners.
  • Prototype build skills and comfort working hands-on in a lab/shop environment.
  • Ability to plan and execute test protocols; analyze results and document conclusions.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers and managing parts from RFQ to production.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-moving team.

Benefits & Compensation
  • Salary Range: $107,700 - $179,600 + Equity
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
