When it comes to finding a job in healthcare, some cities have better opportunities than others. We used ZipRecruiter data from the past 30 days to find out the best MSAs (metropolitan statistical areas) for healthcare jobs.
To determine and rank which MSAs were best, we divided the number of healthcare jobs in each MSA by the number of active job seekers. This gave us the opportunity index. A higher opportunity index equates to better prospects for job seekers. Anyone looking for a position in healthcare should start their employment search with these top-ranking cities:
1. Utica-Rome, New York
Opportunity Index: 19.79
The Utica-Rome MSA is currently the best place in the U.S. to find healthcare jobs. It’s located in the center of New York state, and over 1,200 healthcare jobs in this MSA were recently posted on ZipRecruiter. Jobs are concentrated in the three major cities of Utica, Rome, and New Hartford, and the top healthcare titles in the area are: Dental Hygienist, Urgent Care, LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), Medical Office Assistant, Phlebotomist, and Travel Nurse.
2. Providence-New Bedford-Fall River, Rhode Island-Massachusetts
Opportunity Index: 14.82
In the Providence, Rhode Island area, a whopping 4,283 healthcare jobs have been posted in the last 30 days. This MSA is densely populated, with lots of large and mid-sized cities. Employers in our #2 MSA are looking for candidates to fill open hospital, dental, and nursing roles. Dental Office Manager, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, Medical Biller, and Medical Secretary are the top job listings.
3. Syracuse, New York
Opportunity Index: 11.31
This MSA is anchored by the city of Syracuse, New York and has a population of almost 700K people. Psychiatrist, Urgent Care, Physician, Anesthesiologist, and Therapy Aide are the top advertised healthcare positions in Syracuse. Other cities in this MSA with healthcare opportunities include East Syracuse, Fayetteville, Liverpool, and Memphis.
4. Rochester, New York
Opportunity Index: 10.01
The Rochester MSA includes the city of Rochester (the third most populous city in New York State) as well as rural and farmland communities. In the past 30 days, 1,432 healthcare jobs located in this MSA have been posted on ZipRecruiter. The top posted jobs were in nutrition, optical, nursing, medical research, and speech pathology.
5. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, New York
Opportunity Index: 9.86
The Buffalo-Niagara Falls MSA is the second largest in New York State. In the past 30 days, 1,913 healthcare jobs were posted in this area, in cities like Buffalo, Williamsville, Kenmore, Niagara Falls, and Lancaster. 9. Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, Ohio-Pennsylvania
