DESCRIPTION
Teaching Artist
Kids' Orchestra - Baton Rouge, LA
POSITION SUMMARY
Kids' Orchestra is a year-round program dedicated to building a community of creative, confident, and socially engaged students through music education. Kids' Orchestra provides music education, instruments, and performance opportunities to elementary, middle school, and high school students in the Baton Rouge area.
Teaching artists work with students, parents, site staff, and volunteers to deliver a safe, quality musical experience for students, and create enriching and inclusive educational opportunities at KO sites. Teaching artists report to the Education Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Exhibit a genuine passion for community engagement, teaching, and young artist development
  • Prior experience working with children in a music environment
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills
  • Classroom experience (preferred) or a willingness to learn
  • Working towards, or completion of, a degree in music or music education (preferred)
  • Willingness to make accommodations for students of varying abilities, levels, or exceptionalities/special needs
  • Enthusiasm for the mission and vision of Kids' Orchestra
  • Previous experience working with children in a supervisory role
  • Basic computer skills necessary
  • Must have reliable transportation or a way to get around the city

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDES BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
  • Attend KO professional developments and workshops
  • Thoughtful and organized weekly lesson plans
  • Prepare students for a minimum of two concerts per school year (December and May)
  • Implement daily social and emotional learning (SEL) activities
  • Help students with snack and homework (when applicable)
  • Assist fellow site staff when needed (arrival and dismissal)
  • Create and support an inclusive, safe, and enriching learning environment

HOURS, PAY & REQUIREMENTS
  • 3:30-5:30 Monday and Wednesday OR Tuesday and Thursday (days and times vary based on site)
  • Private lesson scheduling is flexible to fit your schedule
  • Pay starts at $25.00 per half-hour private lesson and starts at $50.00 per group lesson
  • Background Check and Child Abuse Prevention Training are required as a condition of employment
