What is a yard spotter?

At a cargo depot or a shipping port, a yard spotter, also known as a yard jockey, directs and engages in the loading and unloading of cargo while ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow for trucks or vessels. Your responsibilities are to ensure that docks or cargo bays are free when new trucks come into the yard or container ships are offloaded, and you help the yard manager and other personnel with basic maintenance around the storage lot or docks. You have basic administrative and regulatory duties, monitoring and logging container and truck weights and tracking information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a yard spotter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Yard Spotter, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (often CDL Class A or B), experience operating yard trucks or tractors, and a good understanding of warehouse logistics. Familiarity with yard management systems (YMS), two-way radios, and basic vehicle maintenance is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the safe, efficient movement and organization of trailers and containers within busy warehouse or distribution yard environments.

What are common challenges yard spotters face during their shifts, and how can they be managed?
