What you'll do:
The Assistant Yard Manager supports the leadership of daily lumber yard operations to ensure a safe, organized, efficient, and customer-focused environment. This role provides day-to-day direction to Yard Associates, coordinates workload and material movement, supports inventory accuracy, and ensures customer and delivery orders are picked, staged, and loaded safely and accurately.
Working closely with the Yard Manager, Warehouse, Dispatch, Drivers, Sales, and Operations teams, the Assistant Yard Manager helps maintain product availability, yard organization, equipment readiness, and on-time delivery performance. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong lumber and building materials knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to safety, customer service, and operational excellence.
Yard Operations
  • Support the daily operation of the lumber yard, warehouse, loading, and staging areas
  • Ensure lumber, building materials, and related products are properly stocked, stored, organized, and accessible
  • Maintain established yard presentation and housekeeping standards, including product placement, signage, and safe customer access
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs to identify inventory, housekeeping, equipment, or safety concerns
  • Coordinate material movement between storage, staging, loading, and customer pickup areas
  • Ensure materials are properly protected and covered when required
  • Maintain clean, organized, and efficient yard and warehouse environments

Team Leadership
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and work direction to Yard Associates and other assigned personnel
  • Communicate daily priorities, work assignments, material needs, and equipment requirements at the beginning of each shift
  • Assign workloads based on customer impact, job priority, complexity, employee capabilities, and operational needs
  • Monitor assigned work and follow up to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time
  • Adjust priorities and resources as customer or operational requirements change
  • Coach employees to strengthen product knowledge, productivity, safety, and customer service
  • Provide timely feedback and reinforce expectations for performance and accountability
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and development of new and existing employees
  • Foster a respectful, collaborative, and productive work environment

Order Fulfillment and Delivery Preparation
  • Ensure customer and delivery orders are picked, staged, and prepared safely and accurately
  • Coordinate preparation of delivery vehicles to support on-time and in-full deliveries
  • Preload trucks for upcoming deliveries when required
  • Ensure delivery vehicles are loaded safely and according to scheduled delivery sequence and run sheets
  • Verify materials and quantities before orders are released for customer pickup or delivery
  • Coordinate with Dispatch, Drivers, Warehouse, and Operations regarding delivery priorities and material requirements
  • Help resolve missing materials, incomplete orders, or other issues that could affect customer deliveries

Customer Service
  • Provide professional and responsive service to customers visiting the yard
  • Assist customers, contractors, and Drivers with loading and unloading building materials
  • Respond to customer questions and help resolve material or service concerns
  • Ensure customer pickup orders are prepared accurately and efficiently
  • Promote a positive customer experience through safe, organized, and responsive yard operations
  • Escalate customer concerns to the appropriate manager when necessary

Inventory Management
  • Support cycle counts, physical inventories, and other inventory-control activities
  • Help maintain accurate product quantities and storage locations throughout the yard and warehouse
  • Ensure incoming materials are stocked and organized in designated locations
  • Identify and report damaged, missing, misplaced, or incorrectly stored products
  • Coordinate with Inventory, Purchasing, and Operations personnel to address inventory concerns
  • Support inventory organization practices that improve accuracy, accessibility, and material flow

Equipment and Material Handling
  • Safely operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized
  • Ensure forklifts and yard equipment are operated according to company safety procedures
  • Assist with loading and unloading customer vehicles, delivery trucks, and freight containers using forklifts or manual material-handling methods
  • Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly
  • Ensure employees follow established equipment inspection and operating procedures
  • Support efficient utilization of forklifts and other yard equipment

Safety and Operational Excellence
  • Promote and maintain a safety-first culture throughout yard operations
  • Ensure employees follow company safety policies, OSHA requirements, PPE standards, and material-handling procedures
  • Identify and promptly report safety hazards, waste, damaged materials, equipment concerns, accidents, and near misses
  • Maintain safe and accessible aisles, loading areas, storage locations, and customer areas
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, inventory accuracy, and customer service
  • Perform additional duties and operational projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in lumber yard, building materials, warehouse, distribution, or related operations
  • Previous lead, supervisory, or leadership experience preferred
  • Experience with lumber and building materials strongly preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, customers, Drivers, and management

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Business, Operations, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred
  • Previous lumber yard leadership experience
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification
  • Experience with inventory management, cycle counts, order fulfillment, and delivery preparation
  • Experience supervising Yard Associates, Material Handlers, or similar operational employees
  • Familiarity with ERP, inventory, warehouse, or order-management systems
  • Bilingual communication skills are a plus

Work Environment and Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor lumber yard, warehouse, loading, and customer pickup environments
  • Frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and seasonal temperatures
  • Regular exposure to forklifts, trucks, lumber, building materials, dust, noise, and material-handling equipment
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday
  • Ability to bend, reach, climb, stoop, push, pull, and perform physical operational activities as required
  • Ability to safely lift and move building materials using proper lifting techniques, team assistance, or mechanical equipment
  • Required PPE must be worn in designated operational areas
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized
