Writing Intern information

What does a writing intern do?

A Writing Intern assists with creating, editing, and proofreading written content for publications, websites, or marketing materials. Their responsibilities often include researching topics, drafting articles or blog posts, and collaborating with editors or other writers. Writing interns gain practical experience in developing their writing style, meeting deadlines, and understanding editorial processes. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to build their portfolio and learn about the professional writing industry.

What are some typical projects or assignments a writing intern can expect to work on during their internship?

As a Writing Intern, you can expect to contribute to a variety of projects such as drafting blog posts, creating social media content, editing articles, and assisting with newsletters or marketing materials. You may also conduct research to support senior writers or help brainstorm ideas during team meetings. The role often involves collaborating with editors, designers, and other interns, providing a valuable opportunity to learn the editorial process and receive feedback on your work. These diverse experiences help interns build a strong writing portfolio and gain insight into different aspects of professional writing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a writing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Writing Intern, strong writing, research, and editing skills are essential, often supported by coursework or experience in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), word processing software, and basic SEO tools is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and openness to feedback help interns stand out and grow in the role. These skills and qualities are important for producing high-quality content, meeting editorial standards, and adapting to professional writing environments.

What is the difference between Writing Intern vs Content Writer?

AspectWriting InternContent Writer
CredentialsTypically students or entry-level with basic writing skillsOften requires portfolio or experience, sometimes a degree in communications or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in marketing, media, or publishing companiesFull-time or freelance roles in digital media, marketing agencies, or publishing
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training and entry-level positionsUsed across industries for producing content for websites, blogs, and social media

The main difference is that a Writing Intern is typically an entry-level or student position focused on gaining experience, often part-time or temporary, while a Content Writer is a more experienced role responsible for creating and managing content regularly. Interns usually work under supervision, whereas Content Writers often have more independence and responsibility.

How to get a writing internship?

To get a writing internship, applicants should build a portfolio of writing samples, demonstrate strong communication skills, and apply to opportunities through company websites, job boards, or university career centers. Relevant skills include proficiency in writing tools like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and some internships may require a basic understanding of SEO or social media. Networking and tailoring applications to each position can also improve chances of securing an internship in writing.

Do you love using words to captivate, inform, and inspire action? Can you seamlessly adapt your writing style to different formats and audiences? How about a knack for the occasional pun? If so, we want to meet you! The Dog & Cat Business Unit within Central Garden & Pet is seeking a Content Writer Intern to join our Content Team in Neptune City, NJ.

You’ll create content that elevates our brands and resonates with consumers across various touchpoints. This is an exciting opportunity to dive into the creative-meets-strategic world of content creation—crafting everything from website articles and social media posts to packaging copy, emails, press releases, and beyond.

Ideally, you’re a wordsmith with demonstrated content creation and copyediting skills. You will report to the Associate Director, Content Business Strategy in the Creative Department.

This position is based out of our Neptune City, Nj facility 5x a week.

  • Adhere to style guidelines to create content in each brand’s unique voice, tone, and format.
  • Effectively manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Regularly contribute fresh and creative content concepts/ideas.

  • Write and optimize website/e-commerce content for traditional SEO and emerging Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) best practices.
  • Integrate AI tools into your drafting and editing workflow to support, not replace, your own writing and editorial judgment as you move from first draft to final copy.
  • Stay curious about new AI tools and techniques, experimenting with what works best for different content types and sharing learnings with the team.
  • Conduct keyword research for search engine optimization on both search results and e-commerce platforms.

IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES:
  • Published writing samples or a link to an online portfolio are required for consideration
  • 2-3 years of experience writing content either in-house or an agency setting
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field
  • Proven writer and proofreader with professional written and verbal skills
  • Ability to adapt tone and writing style based on medium and audience
  • Can prioritize multiple types of projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with e-commerce product content
  • Understanding of SEO/AEO/GEO best practices is preferred
  • Experience with keyword research tools such as SEM Rush is preferred
