How much do writing center jobs pay per hour?
What Are Different Jobs at a Writing Center?
Different jobs at writing centers include tutors, ESL or adult education specialists, administrators, and center directors. As a writing tutor, your responsibilities are to hold drop-in sessions and office hours where students can come in or make appointments to meet with you about their lessons, a specific assignment, or set of skills they want to improve. Your duties are to assist students in identifying their needs and goals and encouraging good writing and study habits. Specialists may perform similar duties, but they typically teach specific groups, such as non-native speakers or adult learners. Center directors coordinate schedules and review performance.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Writing Center Consultant, and why are they important?
How does a Writing Center tutor typically collaborate with students and faculty to support writing development?

TITLE Peer Consultant in Writing
DEPARTMENT Writing Center
REPORTS TO Kristi Girdharry, kgirdharry@babson.edu
PAY RATE $20/hour
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Babson College Writing Center is a dynamic academic support center and peer learning community. As a Peer Consultant in Writing, you will work one-on-one with fellow Babson students to help them grow as writers-from brainstorming and drafting all the way through revision and editing. This is a meaningful, skill-building role that strengthens your own writing, communication, and leadership capabilities while directly supporting your peers.
The Writing Center serves students across all disciplines, supporting work ranging from course papers and case analyses to cover letters, business plans, and graduate school applications. Our consultants are carefully selected undergraduate writers who are trained to meet each student where they are and help them make informed, effective choices in their work.
A unique opportunity for current Babson undergraduates, in order to apply for this role, you must have taken WRT4602: Practicum in Peer Consulting and Writing.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Conduct 30-minute one-on-one writing consultations with Babson students at all levels and across all disciplines
Support writers through all stages of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, and editing
Help students with a wide range of writing tasks, including course papers, business plans, case analyses, essays, resumes, cover letters, and more
Use a collaborative, non-directive approach: ask guiding questions and offer constructive feedback rather than editing for the student
Manage appointment scheduling and student accounts through WConline, our online scheduling platform
Complete brief Client Report Forms after each session to document work and support continuity of care
Participate in mandatory staff meetings and ongoing trainings that deepen knowledge of writing pedagogy and Writing Center theory
Observe all Writing Center policies, including the shift cancellation policy, appointment etiquette, and confidentiality guidelines
May optionally assist with classroom visits, including WRT courses and other classes to introduce students to Writing Center services, and/or contribute to Writing Center outreach and programming, which may include social media content, workshops, and campus events
Assume additional responsibilities as required.

Ability to manage time effectively, balance consulting hours with academic responsibilities, and arrive prepared and on time for all shifts
Comfort working with students on a wide range of writing assignments
Ability to create an environment where direct reports have the freedom and security to take initiative; deal with complexities with resilience, resourcefulness, and optimism; and appreciate open mindedness, creativity, and agility in thought and tactics.
Ability to embrace ideas and changes created by all community members.
Ability to work independently to solve problems; look for opportunities to take on responsibility; take thoughtful risks; and effectively act on new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.

The Writing Center is open Sunday through Thursday throughout the academic semester, following the Babson undergraduate academic calendar. Consultants choose their own hours based on availability, typically working between 2 and 6 hours per week. Schedules are set at the beginning of each semester.
Virtual or hybrid consulting may be offered at the Director's discretion. Staff meetings are typically held at the beginning, middle, and end of each semester in the Writing Center or an adjacent classroom.
