What is a writing center?

A Writing Center is a dedicated space, often found in educational institutions, where students can receive help with their writing assignments. Staffed by trained tutors or writing specialists, the center offers guidance on all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to revising and editing. The goal is to help students become more confident and effective writers by providing personalized feedback and support. Writing Centers typically assist with a variety of writing tasks, including essays, research papers, and creative projects, and may offer workshops or resources on grammar, citation, and style.

What are different jobs at a writing center?

Different jobs at writing centers include tutors, ESL or adult education specialists, administrators, and center directors. As a writing tutor, your responsibilities are to hold drop-in sessions and office hours where students can come in or make appointments to meet with you about their lessons, a specific assignment, or set of skills they want to improve. Your duties are to assist students in identifying their needs and goals and encouraging good writing and study habits. Specialists may perform similar duties, but they typically teach specific groups, such as non-native speakers or adult learners. Center directors coordinate schedules and review performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a writing center consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Writing Center Consultant, you need strong writing and editing skills, familiarity with academic citation styles, and typically a background in English, education, or a related field. Proficiency with word processing software, online collaboration platforms, and sometimes scheduling or tutoring management systems is also important. Excellent interpersonal communication, active listening, and patience help consultants effectively support diverse student writers. These skills ensure consultants can provide constructive feedback, foster student growth, and contribute to a supportive learning environment.

How does a writing center tutor typically collaborate with students and faculty to support writing development?

Writing Center tutors work closely with students to provide personalized feedback on writing assignments, helping them develop their ideas, structure their arguments, and improve their writing skills. They often collaborate with faculty by understanding assignment requirements and occasionally participating in classroom workshops or presentations. Tutors may also work as part of a team, sharing strategies and resources to ensure consistent support for all students. This collaborative approach fosters a supportive environment focused on growth, learning, and academic success.

Job description

About the Job
Do you remember the teacher who went above and beyond to help you realize your potential? At Vanguard College Prep, we are looking for educators ready to pay that forward. Where other test prep companies hire part-time gig workers to teach 'hacks,' we hire full-time professionals to build lasting core skills. We don't run an assembly line; we treat every student as an individual, preparing them for top-tier colleges and beyond.
Compensation:
  • Base Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 / hour (40 hours/week)
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Time Off: Paid Time Off (PTO), paid sick days, plus fully paid winter vacations

What You Will do:
  • Teach and Inspire: Instruct small groups of students in their English core skills to promote long-term understanding of topics and top scores in their college readiness exams (ACT & SAT).
  • Track Growth: Track your students' progress as they move through Vanguard's unique multi-phase curriculum, engaging students in individualized growth and improvement opportunities along the way.
  • Manage and Model: Maintain and update student lesson schedules, hold them accountable for assignments, and model professionalism along with strong organizational skills through timely student communication.
  • Innovate: Spearhead the development and creative execution of ever-evolving lesson plans and curriculum.
  • Mentor: Guide middle and high school students with empathy and an innate understanding that the college application process is becoming increasingly competitive and stressful.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a humanities field from US Schools (English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Publishing, etc.) (Master's or higher preferred)
  • Teaching experience in English and/or experience working in a college-level Writing Center (1+ years)
  • Demonstrated academic excellence (e.g., 3.5+ GPA).
  • Strong verbal skills and mastery of the English language
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and G-Suites
  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a workspace with minimal noise/distraction
  • Commitment to work during Hours of Operations:
    • Mondays and Fridays: Closed
    • Tuesdays to Thursdays: 1:30 pm CST to 9:30 pm CST
    • Saturdays and Sundays: 9:30 am CST to 5:30 pm CST

The ideal candidate will also possess:
  • Experience teaching at the college or community college level
  • Robust understanding of classroom pedagogy and the ability to create customized, engaging lesson plans that use practical, real-world examples to inspire a love for learning
  • Desire to help students recognize, reach for, and realize their fullest potential
  • A dynamic and outgoing personality
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment

Why you want to teach with Vanguard College Prep:
  • Paid training and comprehensive preparation
  • Distinctive and individualized approach to test prep with a strong track record of producing top-tier students and nationally-ranked test scores
  • Opportunity to work with our distinctly engaged, enthusiastic, and driven client base of students energized by Vanguard's commitment to the highest-quality client experience
  • Elite team of instructors, counselors, and specialists from top universities across the nation who are passionate about fostering student success
  • Quickly-growing start-up environment that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and leadership, with opportunities for long-term career growth
  • Competitive compensation structure (dependent on experience) with benefits

About Vanguard College Prep:
Vanguard College Prep is a full-service educational company whose mission is to enable the future leaders of our globalized world to meet their fullest potential. Through its test prep, college counseling, and college essay services, Vanguard is committed to providing meaningful, all-encompassing college preparation that treats each student as an individual, preparing them for the boardroom, not the assembly line.
Two things set Vanguard apart from other after school companies: our elite team and our personalized, organic curriculum. Unlike other test prep companies, which often take a one-size-fits-all approach to test prep, Vanguard recognizes that every student learns differently. Our experienced instructors and counselors strive to shatter this assembly line model by focusing on core learning rather than short-term strategies and tips, tailoring instruction to fit each student's individual needs. We encourage students' continual questioning and curiosity with the goal of extending learning beyond the classroom, so that our students will be successful in the elite college of their choice and beyond.
