Job description

About Aalo Atomics
Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we're rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world's first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.
About the role
We are building small modular reactors in a factory setting, applying repeatable, production-line manufacturing principles to nuclear-grade hardware. As a Pipefitter / Welder, you will lay out, fabricate, fit, and weld piping systems and support engineering drawings, codes, and specifications across a full range of weld processes.
What you'll do
  • Interpret models, drawings, P&IDs, weld maps, and fabrication/welding specifications.
  • Lay out, cut, bevel, fit, and align pipe, fittings, flanges, and supports for welding.
  • Perform welding on piping and structural components using all applicable processes (GTAW/TIG, SMAW/stick, GMAW/MIG, FCAW, and orbital/automated GTAW) per Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Weld a range of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy piping while maintaining qualified parameters.
  • Fabricate and install pipe hangers, supports, and restraints per drawings.
  • Perform fit-up, tack, root, fill, and cap pass meeting code and drawing requirements.
  • Conduct visual self-inspection of welds; support NDE (PT, RT, UT), hydrostatic/pressure testing, and turnover.
  • Maintain complete traceability of materials, heat numbers, filler metals, and weld records consistent with the nuclear quality program.
  • Follow foreign material exclusion (FME), cleanliness, and configuration control requirements.
  • Maintain welder qualification/continuity and adhere to all safety, radiological, and quality procedures, including stop-work authority.
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completed pipe fitting/welding apprenticeship or equivalent (typically 3-5 years of combined pipe fitting and welding experience).
  • Ability to read and interpret isometric drawings, weld symbols, weld maps, and P&IDs.
  • Demonstrated ability to weld pipe in multiple positions (e.g., 2G, 5G, 6G) and pass qualification testing.
  • Proficiency across multiple weld processes (GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW) on stainless and carbon steel pipe.
  • Proficiency with measuring and layout tools and strong understanding of joint fit-up and tolerances.
  • Ability to follow detailed WPS and written procedures and maintain accurate documentation.
Preferred
  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, shipbuilding, or other high reliability/regulated manufacturing.
  • Active welder qualifications to ASME Section IX, with experience welding to ASME Section III (Subsections NB/NC/ND), B31.1, and B31.3.
  • Familiarity with a nuclear quality assurance program (e.g., 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, NQA-1).
  • Experience with orbital/automated GTAW and thin-wall stainless fit-up.
  • Experience with NDE acceptance criteria and weld defect prevention/repair.
  • Experience working in an FME-controlled environment.
Physical
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in various positions for welding access.
  • Use of welding PPE (hood, FR clothing, gloves) and other PPE as required.
  • Factory/shop floor environment with exposure to noise, fumes, heat, UV/arc flash, and moving equipment.

Requirements
