What does working FIFO mean?

Working FIFO stands for 'Fly-In Fly-Out,' a type of employment commonly used in industries such as mining, oil and gas, and construction. Employees travel from their home location to a remote work site for a set period (such as one or two weeks), then return home for a period of rest. This schedule allows companies to staff remote locations without requiring employees to permanently relocate. FIFO roles can be demanding, with long shifts and extended time away from family, but they often offer competitive pay and benefits. It's important to consider the lifestyle and emotional impact before accepting a FIFO position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) worker?

To thrive as a FIFO worker, you generally need relevant trade qualifications or certifications for your industry (such as mining, construction, or oil and gas), along with strong physical fitness and safety awareness. Familiarity with site-specific machinery, safety protocols, and compliance systems like MSHA/OSHA or site inductions is often required. Adaptability, resilience, and excellent teamwork are essential soft skills for coping with remote environments and rostered shifts. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure safe, efficient operations and to maintain well-being during extended periods away from home.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) workers and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often face challenges such as extended periods away from home, adjusting to a rotating roster, and maintaining work-life balance. The work environment can be physically demanding and may require adapting to remote locations and shared living facilities. Building strong communication with family, staying active, and utilizing employer-provided support services can help manage these challenges. Many companies offer mental health resources and structured downtime to support employee well-being.

In 1984, Craig and Lea Culver, along with Craig's parents George and Ruth, opened the very first Culver's in the family's beloved hometown of Sauk City, Wisconsin, and began serving ButterBurgers and Frozen Custard.
Craveable as our signature combination is, the Culver family knew right away that although the business is centered around the food, it is really about the people. While folks can vividly recall the first time they bit into a ButterBurger or tasted a scoop of rich, creamy Fresh Frozen Custard, it's our way of welcoming guests that truly makes Culver's delicious.
