Job Description: Accounting Manager
Summary/Objective
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring accurate financial reporting for construction projects and company operations. This role manages general ledger activity, job cost accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable support, inventory and equipment-related accounting, month-end close, and compliance reporting. The Accounting Manager works closely with project managers, operations leaders, purchasing, payroll, and executive leadership to support profitability, cost control, and sound financial decision-making.
This position is responsible for maintaining effective accounting processes, strengthening internal controls, improving reporting accuracy, and supporting operational efficiency across construction and field activities.
Essential Functions
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, journal entries, and transaction review.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements and management reports.
  • Monitor and analyze job cost accounting for construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead allocations.
  • Review and reconcile work in progress (WIP) schedules, project cost reports, committed costs, and revenue recognition data.
  • Partner with project managers and operations teams to track project performance against budgets, contracts, and estimated costs.
  • Prepare and analyze cost variances, identify trends, and communicate findings to management with recommendations for corrective action.
  • Oversee accounts receivable processes, including billing support, collections coordination, lien waiver tracking, and customer account reconciliation.
  • Support or supervise accounts payable functions related to vendor invoices, subcontractor payments, expense allocation, and payment processing.
  • Assist with payroll accounting and job labor reporting, ensuring labor costs are accurately captured and assigned to projects.
  • Maintain accounting for equipment, tools, materials, and inventory as applicable, including reconciliations, usage tracking, and adjustment review.
  • Oversee or assist with fixed asset accounting, depreciation schedules, and capital expenditure tracking.
  • Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of sales tax, use tax, and other construction-related regulatory or jurisdictional reporting.
  • Prepare internal financial statements, project reports, cash flow reporting, and other monthly management reports.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting procedures, and workflow processes to support compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with annual audits, tax support schedules, and requests from external accountants, auditors, and leadership.
  • Supervise accounting staff and support cross-functional coordination with project management, purchasing, field operations, and administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and core accounting principles.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, WIP reporting, retainage, progress billing, and revenue recognition.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial and project cost data and translate it into clear operational insight.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of accounting and ERP systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for overseeing assigned accounting staff and may supervise functions such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll support, project accounting, or administrative accounting personnel.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, and accounting software. The position may occasionally visit construction sites, yards, warehouses, or field offices and may be exposed to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and active construction environments. Appropriate personal protective equipment may be required during site visits.
The physical requirements of the role include prolonged periods of sitting, working at a computer, and occasionally standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
Classification/Expected Hours of Employment
This position is full-time and exempt. Standard business hours apply, with additional time as needed during month-end close, year-end activities, audits, and peak project cycles.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience required.
  • Construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with job costing, WIP schedules, project billing, and cost control preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a construction, contracting, industrial, or project-based environment.
  • Knowledge of payroll-related job costing and subcontractor accounting.
  • Familiarity with construction ERP/accounting systems.
  • CPA, CMA, or other relevant certification is a plus.
