Job description
- Serve as a primary advisor, assisting students with degree audits/plans of study, course scheduling, and course registration for undeclared students and students pursuing Bachelor of General Studies Bachelor and Applied Science degrees.
Provides systematic and frequent coaching on an individual and group basis related to academic success, personal and/or professional development, career/major exploration activities, learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials, resume writing best practices, interview strategies, application strategies, and job search skills using computer guidance systems to improve student success in accordance with the University mission. Assists students in developing self-efficacy and motivates students to practice self-regulation in taking ownership of their academic success.
Maintain knowledge of current academic and institutional policies and procedures unique to the institution, and educate and assist students in complying with such items including but not limited to Graduation Requirements, Academic Standards of Progress, Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, Academic Bankruptcies, Pre-requisites, Co-requisites, Course Sequencing, Admissions Requirements, New Programs, etc.
Foster relationships with institutional faculty and staff to provide appropriate and accurate academic plans and referrals for students working with the Student Success Center. Refers students to appropriate academic, personnel, and support resources and collaborates with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred.
Counsel undeclared and declared major students both individually and in groups.
Administer assessment instruments and computerized career guidance systems, assist students with interpretation of results, writing and review of resumes, and guidance on job search and application procedures.
Instruct students and employers in proper use of Hire a Lion, Optimal Resume, and other services.
Monitors and accurately documents progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication, responding to students questions, concerns, and needs.
Assists with outreach to and follow-up with students who are on academic probation or who have been referred through the MSSU early alert online system referred to as Lion Alert.
In consultation with the Registrars Office and/or Transfer Guide, unofficially evaluate and determine the transferability of credits.
Present outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations.
Teaches 2 credit hours per academic year (fall, spring, summer), if needed, in the University Experience Curriculum.
Assists with working events hosted by the Student Success Center. Occasional nights/weekends are expected with event management.
Assists with creating and/or maintaining student resources (guides, handouts, manuals, etc.) published by the Student Success Center.
Maintain competency and professional currency through self-directed professional reading, professional association memberships, attendance at conferences, workshops, institutional, and departmental professional development programs.
Participate in departmental assessment processes.
Contributes to the overall success of the Institutions mission by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Serves as the primary Student Employment resource for all MSSU students, parents, supervisors, staff and the local community.
Creates, administers, reviews, updates, and educates the campus community on all policies and procedures regarding Student Employment; maintains the Student Employment Handbook.
Verifies student eligibility, administers and oversees all aspects of the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program, including the distribution of the work-study funds and the continuous management of funds. Works closely with departments across campus to ensure compliance with FWS regulations and regulatory changes. Accumulates statistics on all job postings, applicants and Federal Work-Study distribution of funds. Assists Career Services with the Federal Job Location and Development (JLD) program. Responsible for accurate reporting of FWS funds and accurate collection and reporting of job data for annual FISAP report. Counsels students individually on Federal Work-Study eligibility and issues regarding financial aid and academic progress.
Establishes procedures and manages the process for which all incoming requests for on-campus positions are received, evaluated and posted. Directs, administers and oversees all procedures for the recruitment, selection and placement of students for posted on-campus student employment positions.
Meets with every new student employee to assist with tax paperwork and MSSU new employee paperwork. Educates them on student employment policy regarding work hours, time sheets, payroll, FERPA and mandatory employee training.
Works directly with department supervisors to ensure proper hiring practices and effective supervision of student employees. Advises and trains campus departmental supervisors of the processes and best practices for recruitment, hiring and retention of student employees. Educates and advises departmental supervisors on employment policy and how to resolve issues or problems with student employees. Manages and advises employee relations between student employees and departmental supervisors when issues arise. Maintains partnerships and develops working relationships with all MSSU departments that hire student employees.
Manages the student on-campus section of Hire A Lion, the campus online job posting board, in conjunction with MSSU Career Services. Verifies all student new hires meet MSSU criteria to work as a student employee. Manages all aspects of the Student Employment section of the Employee Intranet and departmental website.
Serves as Chair of the Student Employment Task Force which monitors items such as student wages, student classification and future modifications to student employment. Participates in campus job fairs and coordinates relevant services with MSSU Career Services.
Serves as a Liaison to Financial Aid, Human Resources, and Payroll Offices to ensure accurate reporting of student employees and coordinates the flow of legal documents between the offices.
Assists the Director of Career Services in completing the Graduate Employment Report.
Promote positive institutional climate by serving on campus committees as requested.
Education, Experience, and Licenses
Master's degree (M. A. or M.S.) from accredited college or university required, with preference given to degrees in the following fields: student affairs, counseling, student personnel, higher education administration or leadership, education, education psychology, or related field. Masters degree in progress will be considered with expectation of completing degree in two years.
Strong computing skills and knowledge of relevant technologies (learning and management systems, and other academic support and administrative systems) are required.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented atmosphere preferred.
Experience in providing academic and/or career support to students in a college-level setting is preferred.
