These jobs are often located on campus or with approved off-campus employers and are designed to be flexible with students' class schedules. Work study positions can include roles in administrative offices, libraries, research labs, or community service organizations, and they provide valuable work experience while helping to offset educational expenses.

Work Study positions are primarily designed for students enrolled in college, offering financial aid and relevant work experience within academic or related environments. Internships are broader, often targeted at students or recent graduates seeking industry experience across various sectors. While both provide valuable work exposure, Work Study is more focused on supporting education costs, whereas internships emphasize career development.

Is work-study worth it?

Work-study is a federal program that provides part-time jobs for students to help cover education expenses. It offers flexible hours and relevant work experience, which can benefit students' resumes, but the financial value depends on the job's pay rate and hours worked. Overall, it can be worthwhile for students seeking income and work experience during school.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a work study, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Work Study, you generally need strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to balance academic and work responsibilities, often with eligibility based on financial aid requirements. Familiarity with basic office software, campus systems, and sometimes data entry tools is typically required. Reliability, professionalism, and effective communication help students stand out in diverse campus work environments. These skills are essential for meeting job expectations, supporting campus operations, and maintaining academic performance.

How do work study positions typically balance job responsibilities with academic schedules?

Work study positions are designed to accommodate students' academic commitments, with supervisors often offering flexible scheduling and reduced hours during exam periods. Students are generally expected to communicate their class schedules and workload in advance to ensure shifts do not conflict with academic requirements. While workload varies by department, most roles emphasize efficient time management and prioritize academics, fostering a supportive environment for student employees. Many work study roles also provide opportunities to develop professional skills and network within the institution.

Job description

Overview

Join the Imaging Team at Piedmont Walton

Piedmont Walton is seeking a dedicated Cardiac Sonographer to join our highly skilled and collaborative cardiovascular imaging team. This position performs high-quality adult transthoracic echocardiograms (TTEs) and assists with transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) procedures in a busy hospital-based environment serving both inpatient and outpatient populations. We perform adult cardiac studies only and do not provide pediatric echocardiography services.

Our sonographers work closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information that directly impacts patient care. We are committed to excellence in imaging, patient-centered care, teamwork, and continuous professional growth.

As a high-volume department, we value quality over quantity and are looking for someone who takes pride in producing accurate, diagnostic-quality studies, demonstrates a strong work ethic, is dependable, works well independently, and understands the importance of flexibility and teamwork. We offer a supportive team environment, exposure to a wide variety of cardiac pathology, and opportunities to expand your knowledge and experience.

This is a day-shift position with several scheduling options currently available, including 3x12-hour shifts, 4x10-hour shifts, or 5x8-hour shifts per week. We strive to offer scheduling flexibility whenever possible and will discuss available options during the hiring process. Once hired, employees maintain a consistent weekly schedule.

Why join our team? We have an experienced, supportive group of sonographers who are passionate about echocardiography and committed to providing exceptional patient care. You will work closely with an engaged cardiology team, encounter a diverse range of cardiac pathology, and be part of a department that values quality, teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.

If you are passionate about echocardiography, enjoy working in a collaborative environment, and want to be part of a team that genuinely cares about patients and each other, we would love to hear from you.
