Job Description

  • ETAMU students must be currently enrolled or pre-registered in classes holding at least part-time status of 6 hours for undergraduate and 3 hours for graduate.

  • You can only be hired into one position to start working with Campus Recreation.

Important Dates:

  • Interviews will take place in the week of August 10, and you will be notified through your ETAMU Leomail if you make it or not to the interview phase.
  • Hire Date: Saturday, August 22nd
  • Finalizing the hiring process at Human Resources TBD, 30 minutes, in-person
  • Lifeguard certification course: August 17th and 18th, 6 online hours and 18 hours in-person
  • Mandatory department new hire training: TBD 2 hours, in-person
  • Mandatory new hire position training: Arranged, 3-10 hours, in-person

Lifeguard certification is not required in order to apply. If you have a certification, please make sure to list it in your resume.

As part of thein-personinterview, we will assess the applicant's swimming capabilities. The applicant must:

  • Have a swimsuit.
  • Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface, and swim 50 yards.
  • After swimming 50 yards, maintain your position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading using only your legs, floating, or a combination of both.
  • After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
  • While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control.
  • You may use the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.

As a condition of hire, youmustattend and pass an American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Course. This course is being offeredin person.There are no additional costs to take this course.

If you are not able to pass the in-person skills tests interview and attend this course, then you cannot be hired.

Position Title: Lifeguard

Pay Rate: $11.00 per hour

Summary of Responsibilities:

The lifeguard position is employed to monitor and ensure the safety of patrons in the facility's pool, spa, basketball courts, and outdoor seating areas.

Primary Duties:

  • Enforce all pool, Campus Recreation, and University policies and procedures
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and safety
  • Activate facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP) when necessary and provide appropriate care
  • Perform American Red Cross lifeguarding life-saving rescues
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Department Responsibilities

  • Market Campus Recreation and area events.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing an environment where people feel welcomed, valued, supported, and respected as they work to pursue their academic and professional goals.
  • Act as a first responder in emergency situations
  • Attend all department and area trainings and meetings as assigned
  • Keep up to date on all TrainTraq assignments
  • Be prepared to encounter and respond to various hazards, with training provided to ensure safety and proper handling of potential risks.
  • Maintain a standard of conduct while participating in Campus Rec activities or facilities, serving as a role model for other patrons by adhering to all safety, behavior, and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assists with department events and programming as needed
  • Work early morning, night and weekend hours as needed
  • Must maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard or Shallow Water Lifeguard certification. Provided by the department at no cost.

Minimum Qualifications for Consideration:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or Shallow Water Lifeguard certification (Condition of employment and hire)
    • Condition of hire - must have or obtain certification before being officially hired. Must attend certification course after being offered position.
  • Ability to swim 100m utilizing either front crawl or breast stroke
  • Ability to swim one length of the pool, go down 3 feet, retrieve a 10lb brick swim back with it on your chest using only your legs
  • Ability to tread water or float for 2 minutes
  • Must be able to perform American Red Cross lifeguarding life-saving rescues successfully
