Description
The Nursing Department supports Halifax Community College's mission, vision, and strategic priorities by preparing students to achieve academic, professional, and personal goals in service to a diverse and global society. The department promotes student learning, safe clinical practice, continuous program improvement, and partnerships that support workforce needs in the region.
The Nursing Student Success Coach is a part-time, non-instructional position that supports pre-licensure nursing students through academic coaching, individualized success planning, remediation support, and group learning strategies. The position assists students with study skills, time management, test-taking strategies, preparation for nursing courses and standardized exams, and use of academic resources aligned with program outcomes. The position collaborates with nursing faculty and program leadership to support student progression, retention, and success while maintaining appropriate documentation of coaching contacts and remediation plans.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
- Provide individual and group academic coaching and support to pre-licensure nursing students based on identified learning needs, course expectations, assessment data, and faculty referrals.
- Support students in developing effective study skills, time management strategies, test-taking approaches, resource utilization habits, and preparation strategies for nursing courses and standardized assessments.
- Assist students with learning support in nursing content areas such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, fundamentals of nursing, and other nursing courses as assigned and within the coach's scope of expertise.
- Use student performance data, interview techniques, and academic coaching conversations to identify strengths, learning barriers, and areas for improvement.
- Develop individualized student success or remediation plans in collaboration with the student and, when appropriate, faculty or program leadership.
- Meet with students on a regular basis to monitor progress, reinforce agreed-upon strategies, and document utilization of remediation or support plans.
- Provide academic support to re-entry students as assigned by program leadership.
- Provide consistent guidance to students that aligns with course content, program outcomes, faculty expectations, and professional nursing standards.
- Maintain documentation of coaching contacts, remediation plans, progress updates, and related student success activities in accordance with program procedures.
- Communicate relevant student success feedback to faculty and program leadership while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
Faculty Assignments Other Than Instruction
- Maintain awareness of pre-licensure nursing program learning outcomes, course expectations, retention goals, and student success resources.
- Maintain accurate attendance and scholastic records of students
- Develop advisement initiatives that result in student success and retention.
- Assist with recruitment, advisement, retention, student outreach, and progression support activities.
- Submit required reports and updates related to student coaching, remediation activities, and outcomes.
- Support educational program quality by contributing to the College's Quality Enhancement Plan.
Other Duties as Assigned
Performs other related duties that are consistent with the purpose of the position, the employee's classification, and the operational needs of the College.

- Skill in documentation, follow-up, organization, and timely communication with students, faculty, and program leadership.
- Solution-oriented approach to student support, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina, or licensure in another state with eligibility to obtain North Carolina licensure.
- Minimum of two calendar years of full-time clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Associate degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution or nursing program recognized by the appropriate accrediting/regulatory body.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to use technology systems required for documentation, communication, and student support.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Post-secondary teaching, tutoring, coaching, remediation, or student success experience, preferably in a pre-licensure nursing program.
- Experience with evaluation of learning outcomes, patient safety initiatives, clinical-based education, simulation-based learning support, or standardized exam preparation.
- Experience using learning management, retention, assessment, or student success platforms.
Note: Licenses and/or certifications used for credentialing purposes must be maintained in current status by the employee unless otherwise stated by College policy or applicable regulatory requirements.
Language Skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Ability to perform basic math computations including adding, subtracting, multiplying and averaging all units of measure.
- Ability to compute fractions, percentages and decimals.
- Ability to use effective critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency or, within a timely manner, be able to achieve proficiency in a Windows environment. Knowledge of email systems, Microsoft Office Applications, Blackboard, Aviso (Watermark) Retention, and other PC/web-based and simulation tools.

Computer, telephone, printer/copier/scanner, email, Microsoft Office applications, learning management systems, and standard office technology.

Physical Demands
