Job description

ATC Automation is seeking a motivated Machinist Apprentice to join our growing team in Cookeville, Tennessee. This apprenticeship provides an excellent opportunity to begin a rewarding career in precision machining and custom automation while learning from experienced machinists in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
As a Machinist Apprentice, you will receive on-the-job training in machining operations, blueprint interpretation, precision measuring, and manufacturing processes while working alongside skilled professionals. You will gain experience operating manual and using machine tools, producing high-quality components, and supporting the fabrication of custom automation equipment used by customers around the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn to safely operate manual and machine tools under the guidance of experienced machinists.
  • Assist in setting up and operating mills, lathes, saws, grinders, and other machining equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
  • Measure and inspect machined components using precision measuring instruments to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Learn proper machining techniques, tooling selection, machine setup, and material handling practices.
  • Assist with cutting, drilling, milling, turning, grinding, and finishing components for custom automation equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following company safety procedures.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance and basic machine care activities.
  • Work collaboratively with machinists, engineers, and fabrication personnel to support production schedules.
  • Document completed work and communicate progress with supervisors and team members.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and skill development throughout the apprenticeship program.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and an interest in machining and manufacturing.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to perform measurements and calculations.
  • Ability to read measuring devices or willingness to learn precision measurement techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, typically 8 or more hours per shift.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following established safety procedures.

Preferred Skills
  • Coursework in machining, manufacturing, engineering, or industrial technology.
  • Vocational or technical school experience in machining or machine tool technology.
  • Exposure to manual or CNC machining equipment.
  • Familiarity with blueprint reading or precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Previous manufacturing or shop experience is beneficial but not required.

Physical Demands and Conditions
  • Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights of up to 35 feet.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in various conditions.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, moving/rotating equipment, fumes, dust, oil and other fluids.
  • Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.
  • Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • VISUAL ACUITY: Near acuity with or without accommodation.
  • HEARING Ability: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose.
