What is a work study electrical engineering?
A Work Study Electrical Engineering job is a part-time position designed for students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. It provides hands-on experience in the field while allowing students to earn income to support their education. Responsibilities may include assisting with circuit design, testing electrical systems, conducting research, or supporting lab activities. These positions are often offered by universities, research institutions, or engineering firms. The goal is to help students apply theoretical knowledge to practical projects and gain valuable industry experience.
What kinds of projects or assignments can I expect as a work study electrical engineering student?
As a Work Study Electrical Engineering student, you can expect to assist with tasks such as laboratory experiments, testing and troubleshooting electrical components, supporting senior engineers on research or design projects, and preparing technical documentation. Depending on your institution or employer, you may also help manage lab inventory, set up equipment, gather and analyze data, or participate in ongoing engineering studies. This role often involves collaborating with faculty, professional engineers, and fellow students, providing a valuable opportunity to gain practical skills in a real-world environment. The experience you gain can be a strong foundation for future internships or full-time engineering roles after graduation.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the work study electrical engineering position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Work Study Electrical Engineering professional, you should have a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, basic circuit design, and analytical problem-solving skills, typically gained through coursework toward an electrical engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as MATLAB or Multisim, as well as proficiency in using lab equipment and possibly AutoCAD, is important for practical tasks. Strong communication, teamwork, reliability, and time management are key soft skills that help you balance academic and work responsibilities. These skills enable students to effectively contribute to engineering projects, gain hands-on experience, and collaborate productively within academic or professional settings.

Job description
Who We Are. Chevron is one of the world's leading energy companies-but what really sets us apart is how we're rethinking energy for the future. From producing oil and gas to developing lowercarbon technologies, Chevron engineers work across the full energy system to power everyday life more safely, efficiently, and responsibly. Learn more about What We Do and The Chevron Way.
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Chevron operates around the globe and across the entire energy value chain. Learn more on our website Chevron.com.
What You'll Actually Do
Chevron is hiring Facilities Engineering Interns for Electrical EngineeringIntern roles at various operating locations across the U.S, including:
- Ames, Iowa
- Bakersfield, California
- Belle Chasse, Louisiana
- Covington, Louisiana
- El Segundo, California
- Geismar, Louisiana
- Greeley, Colorado
- Houston, Texas
- Midland, Texas
- Pasadena, Texas
- Pascagoula, Mississippi
- Richmond, California
- Salt Lake City, Utah
Electrical, Instrumentation & Control Engineering interns will be assigned an engineering mentor and will be assigned one or more projects during their internship to support operating facilities through the application of technical engineering knowledge and project management skills. These areas of support may include:
- Optimizing facilities to deliver maximum value safely and reliably.
- Providing technical engineering support for turnarounds and projects.
- Developing and/or deploying industry leading technologies to reduce carbon, increase efficiency and maximize returns.
- Using digitalization and data analytics to improve process operations and safety.
At the completion of the internship, interns will have the opportunity to apply for a return internship or full-time position with Chevron. If accepted for a full-time entry level position, engineering graduates
will be enrolled in Chevron's Horizons Program, an early-career development program combining formal training, on-the-job competency development, mentoring, and multiple job assignments. Electrical Engineers will be enrolled in either an Electrical Systems development track or an Instrumentation & Controls development path to develop a core technical foundation to draw upon throughout their career. Both tracks develop competencies for designing and maintaining instrumentation and control devices and electrical power systems and equipment, with specialization depending on the track assigned. Engineers in these roles support activities ranging from process control networks and process automation systems to optimize plants, operating large power systems and generators, assuring power system integrity and reliability, and monitoring power systems for efficient power management.
Horizons engineers typically complete the development program in their first five years of employment and may have the opportunity to work in multiple work locations during that time. After graduating from Horizons, mechanical engineers may continue to work in roles aligned with their initial Horizons track, or they may choose to focus on other areas of interest, including:
- Reliability & Integrity Engineering - focused on asset integrity, reliability, maintainability, and operability of operating assets.
- Technical Safety Engineering - identify hazards, assess risk, and develop mitigation strategies through application of engineering design principles to a managed level of risk for operating facilities and capital projects.
- Subsea Engineering - focused on design, construction, integration, testing, and installation of subsea equipment, controls, umbilicals, and pipelines; also includes engineering for well intervention, production optimization, and reliability of the subsea system.
- Engineering Design & Projects - deliver high quality designs and predictable execution of projects through the development and application of sound engineering and design principles and processes.
- General Facilities Engineering - Support operating facilities through application of broad fundamental technical engineering knowledge and small project execution skills.
Electrical and Instrumentation & Control Engineers have the opportunity to advance throughout their career as individual contributors or as engineering supervisors and managers. Opportunities also exist for facilities engineers to work in and lead other business functions such as Operations or Business Development & Commercial.
What's Next After the Internship
Topperforming interns may be invited back-or offered a fulltime role after graduation.
New grads who join Chevron fulltime enter the Horizons Program, a structured earlycareer experience that includes:
- Formal training + onthejob learning
- Mentorship from experienced professionals
- Multiple job assignments and possible location rotations
You can build a career as a technical expert, people leader, or both.
What You Must Have
The following are required qualifications:
- Students pursuing a bachelors or masters degree in electrical engineering.
- Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to demonstrate The Chevron Way.
Why Intern at Chevron?
- You work on real projects, not side tasks
- You use modern tools and cloud platforms
- You learn how software scales in a global enterprise
- You build skills that translate anywhere
- You're supported by experienced engineers and mentors
Compensation & Benefits
The anticipated monthly (hourly) range for this position is $29.95 hourly - $8,800 monthly. The selected candidate's monthly or hourly compensation will be determined based on their selected role, degree level and academic year.
As an intern, you will receive the following benefits:

- Participation in Employee Savings Investment Plan with immediate vesting in both employee and company contributions.
- Chevron matching contributions:
- 4% company match for a 1% employee contribution.
- 8% company match for a 2% employee contribution.

- Work schedules:
- Flexible work schedules (5/40, 9/80, or 4/10), as determined by the work group and confirmed with the hiring manager.
- Paid holidays depending on your work schedule.
- Full year of service credit for each internship completion (must be re-employed within 365 days)
If later converted to a fulltime new graduate position, Chevron offers competitive pay and benefits to eligible employees, including healthcare, time off, retirement plans, and development opportunities. Learn more at http://hr2.chevron.com/
