Job description

About the role

We are looking for a sharp, pragmatic attorney to join Roku's Legal Ad Partnerships & Sales ("LAPS") team within the Legal & Business Affairs organization. This role sits at the heart of Roku's advertising business - supporting the ad sales, ad platform, and publisher ad services teams with the transactional legal work that powers Roku's growth.

You will negotiate and structure complex commercial agreements across the digital advertising ecosystem, advise on data privacy in the context of live deals, and serve as a trusted legal partner to a wide range of business stakeholders. This is a high-visibility role for an attorney who understands both the technology and the deal dynamics behind modern programmatic and data-driven advertising and who is excited to help build the legal infrastructure that lets Roku's advertising business move with speed and confidence.

The estimated annual base salary for this position is between $230,000 and $260,000 with additional equity. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographic location. This role is eligible for health insurance, equity awards, life insurance, disability benefits, parental leave, wellness benefits, and paid time off.

This position will be based in either New York, NY or San Jose, CA and will be in office Monday - Thursday with the option to work from home on Friday.

What you'll be doing
  • Commercial transactions and deal support
    • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of agreements across the ad tech ecosystem, including publisher and content provider agreements, DSP and SSP agreements, advertiser and agency contracts, data licenses, insertion orders, and ad tech vendor and platform agreements
    • Structure master services agreements, data integration arrangements, and vendor agreements in support of Roku's advertising platform
  • Data privacy and regulatory advice
    • Advise on data privacy considerations embedded in commercial transactions, bringing a confident working knowledge of the evolving privacy law landscape to each deal
    • Stay current on developments in martech, ad tech, digital media, retail media, OTT/CTV, and applicable regulations including data privacy laws
  • Cross-functional partnership
    • Collaborate closely with ad sales, ad partnerships, ad ops, content & services, finance, tax, product, engineering, and marketing teams - serving as a legal partner, not a gatekeeper
    • Independently navigate stakeholder input across departments and translate legal requirements into clear, actionable business guidance
  • Process and scalability
    • Help develop scalable, risk-calibrated processes that give the advertising team the flexibility to move quickly without sacrificing legal rigor
  • Leveraging AI and modern legal tools
    • Use AI-powered legal tools and large language models to accelerate contract review, drafting, and analysis - and help identify opportunities to further integrate AI into the team's workflows
    • Bring a forward-thinking approach to legal operations, including comfort with and curiosity about how emerging technology is reshaping the practice of law
What you need to know
  • Adtech transactional expertise
    • Deep experience negotiating supply-side agreements, demand-side agreements, data licensing agreements, and IOs with advertisers, agencies, and publishers
    • Solid understanding of digital advertising technology, programmatic ecosystems, and the IAB terms and conditions landscape
  • Privacy and data
    • Excellent working knowledge of data privacy and marketing
    • Significant experience drafting and negotiating advertising data and measurement licenses, including privacy and data security provisions
  • Business and legal judgment
    • Demonstrated ability to translate legal requirements into actionable business advice for fast-moving teams
    • Pragmatic approach to problem solving, sound judgment under ambiguity, and the entrepreneurial mindset to work independently in a constantly evolving environment
  • Cross-functional influence
    • Proven ability to build relationships across departments and work effectively in a matrixed environment
    • Strong track record of handling complex business and legal issues in a fast-paced, agile, technology-driven company
We're excited if you have
  • At least 5 years of combined transactional legal experience at a law firm and in-house, with meaningful time spent on internet, technology, and/or media companies in the ad tech or data space
  • Familiarity with both B2B and B2C aspects of the digital advertising ecosystem
  • Experience working with brands, advertising agencies, publishers, and other content providers
  • Skills across the full range of digital advertising legal issues - including intellectual property, data protection, consumer protection, cookie/beacon technologies, programmatic targeting, and audience data management
  • A track record of quickly understanding complex products and services and offering creative solutions for business enablement
  • J.D. from a U.S. accredited law school and active bar membership in New York or California
What success looks like
  • The ad sales and ad ops teams have a legal partner they trust to move deals forward quickly and with confidence
  • Agreements across the advertising ecosystem are negotiated efficiently, with clear risk framing and business-enabling solutions
  • Privacy and data issues are surfaced and resolved at the deal stage - not after the fact
  • Legal processes and templates scale with the business so the team doesn't become a bottleneck
  • AI tools are embedded in day-to-day workflows, and this role helps set the standard for how the broader legal team works smarter
