Position Summary:

  • Support and enhance LabWare LIMS v8, integrations, workflow optimization, reporting and laboratory informatics initiatives.
  • Work closely with scientists, LIMS Supervisor and laboratory leadership.


Job Description:

We need you as a Business Analyst to help communicate and implement enhancements to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMs). This system houses all the configuration, rules, tests and test data needed to generate lab results for the Infectious Disease (includes Bioterrorism Response Lab, Chemical Threats Response Lab, and Next Generation Sequencing Lab) , Toxicology, and Environmental Chemistry sections. Your role works closely with the Section Chief Scientist, LIMS Supervisor and all lab personnel involved with specimen testing. You will coordinate necessary system changes to deliver results. To be successful in this role you need to be detail oriented, explain technical concepts to non-technical people and deliver required results to the lab sections.


Principal Duties:

  • As a Business Analyst/Developer, you will be assigned a lab section and will:
  • Support new LIMS (Labware v. 8) and API integration.
  • Provide HL7 integration architecture, development, enhancement, testing and support
  • Maintain working knowledge of LIMS, specifically Labwar v. 8).
  • Work with other LIMS analysts to support communication with UPHL Leadership on LIMS priorities, data security, and informatics needs.
  • Program and troubleshoot system functionality and make recommendations on solutions in a timely manner.
  • Identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
  • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.


The Ideal Candidate has:

  • Experience programming, implementing and maintaining complex software systems.
  • The ability to determine user needs and convert to business and technical requirements.
  • The ability to evaluate and test software functionality to meet a business need.
  • The capacity to simultaneously handle multiple projects or tasks.
  • Experience teaching end users how to use complex software systems.
  • Knowledge of flow diagram software and the ability to create a workflow.
  • Capability to organize and write documentation that clearly states and outlines the objectives.
  • Capacity to see the forest for the trees and translate the concepts to the testing personnel and leadership bi-directional
  • Ability to derive joy from diving directly into complex challenges and deliver solutions.
  • Experience working with large databases along with data retrieval.
  • An understanding of general laboratory processes, terminologies, quality, and regulatory requirements.


Preference:

  • Employment experience and knowledge of laboratory methodology and processes in the assigned lab section. Below are examples that a preferred incumbent holds the knowledge/understanding in each section:
  • Environmental Chemistry Section: Sample preparation batch vs. analysis batch; detection limits vs. reporting limits; standards vs reagents; instrument blank vs. reagent blank vs. field blank, TNI/EPA reporting regulations.
  • Infectious Disease Section: Chain of Custody; understanding reagent batches vs cultures, overall reportable results determined by an algorithm of test results. Building reflex rules based on test results. CLIA/FDA/CDC reporting elements.
  • Experience working with and supporting other laboratory information management systems (LIMS), dedicated to managing sample testing in Infectious Disease, Toxicology, and/or Environmental Chemistry laboratories.
  • Experience of performing queries in Labware LIMS, modifying minor coding issues in Labware LIMS and Customized report settings by Crystal Reports.

  • A degree in Epidemiology, Laboratory Science, Computer Science, or Informatics
  • Has experience evaluating processes, gathering requirements, and translating to technical specifications
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Is a team player and can work well with others
  • Has experience working with relational databases and SQL
  • Can plan, organize, and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines across multiple, complex projects
  • Can utilize MS Word, Excel and lucid to create documents and reports
  • Can work with minimal supervision
  • Has impeccable time management and efficiency skills
