What are WordPress jobs?

WordPress jobs fall into two major categories. Automattic, the owner of WordPress, has positions where you can work as a developer on the back end and create new content for the platform. However, the majority of jobs focus on being a user and knowing how and when to use the many features that WordPress offers. In these roles, you may be asked to develop and maintain a Wordpress site, code original themes and content, evaluate design aspects, conduct website testing, and design new applications. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of these jobs usually requires several years of experience with WordPress. As part of their qualifications, some employers may ask to see a portfolio of work so they can evaluate your skills.

What is a WordPress developer?

WordPress developers are professionals who specialize in designing, building, and maintaining websites using the WordPress content management system (CMS). They may create custom themes, develop plugins, and optimize sites for performance, security, and user experience. WordPress developers often work with clients to bring their website ideas to life, ensuring the site is functional, responsive, and easy to manage. Their expertise ranges from front-end design to back-end development, depending on the needs of the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a WordPress developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WordPress Developer, you need strong expertise in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and experience with WordPress themes and plugins, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Git, MySQL, page builders, and knowledge of security best practices, as well as certifications such as WordPress-specific courses, are advantageous. Problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for meeting client needs and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure efficient website development, customization, maintenance, and client satisfaction in a dynamic web environment.

How does a WordPress developer typically collaborate with designers and content creators on website projects?

WordPress Developers frequently work closely with designers to implement visually appealing and user-friendly layouts, often translating design mockups into functional themes. They also coordinate with content creators to ensure that posts, pages, and multimedia are seamlessly integrated and optimized for SEO. Effective communication and use of project management tools are key, as developers must balance technical requirements with the creative vision and content strategy of the team. This collaboration ensures that the final website aligns with both business goals and user needs.

  • WordPress Core: Deep understanding of WordPress functions, APIs, and best practices.
  • Frontend Languages: Expert in HTML, CSS3 (SASS/SCSS), JavaScript.

  • Experience working with databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with responsive/mobile-first development
  • Understanding of version control (Git/GitHub) and local/staging workflows, RESTful APIs and third-party integrations.
  • Familiarity with page speed optimization, image optimization, caching, and security best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and organizational skills.
Bonus if you have:
  • Experience with Elementor Pro, or other page builders (but can work without them)
  • Knowledge of managing CMS structure, admin UX, and custom fields using ACF or similar tools
  • Have implemented third-party APIs and integrations (e.g. CRMs, booking tools, eCommerce)
  • Hosting management (cPanel, managing DNS, Cloudflare, installing SSLs etc.)
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and room to grow
  • A variety of projects across industries and tech stacks
  • Opportunities to work on diverse, creative, and challenging projects.
  • Supportive team culture that values innovation and collaboration.
