What is a wire EDM operator?

Wire EDM Operators are skilled technicians who use wire electrical discharge machines (EDM) to cut, shape, and manufacture precise metal parts and components. They set up, program, and operate the EDM machines, often working with blueprints or CAD files to create components with tight tolerances. Their responsibilities include selecting the correct wire, monitoring the machining process, ensuring quality control, and performing basic machine maintenance. Wire EDM Operators often work in manufacturing industries such as aerospace, automotive, and tool and die making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wire EDM operator?

To thrive as a Wire EDM Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience with precision measuring instruments, often supported by technical training or machining certifications. Familiarity with CNC wire EDM machines, CAD/CAM software, and related programming systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring high-precision manufacturing, maintaining quality standards, and contributing to efficient production workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by wire EDM operators and how can they be addressed?

Wire EDM Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, managing machine maintenance, and troubleshooting wire breakage or surface finish issues. These can be addressed by thoroughly understanding machine settings, regularly inspecting and maintaining equipment, and staying updated with the latest machining techniques. Collaboration with engineers and quality control teams is also important to ensure that parts meet specifications and to address any production issues promptly.

What is the difference between Wire Edm Operator vs CNC Wire Cutting Technician?

AspectWire Edm OperatorCNC Wire Cutting Technician
CredentialsTypically requires technical training or certification in EDM or manufacturingRequires CNC programming and machining certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or machine shop setting, operating wire EDM machinesMachine shops, manufacturing plants, operating CNC wire cutting equipment
Industry UsageCommon in precision manufacturing, aerospace, toolingUsed in similar industries, often overlapping with EDM operations

The main difference between a Wire Edm Operator and a CNC Wire Cutting Technician lies in their focus: the Wire Edm Operator primarily handles wire EDM machines for precision parts, while the CNC Wire Cutting Technician may also program and troubleshoot CNC wire cutting equipment. Both roles require technical skills and are vital in manufacturing environments focused on high-precision components.

Job description

Description:

Wire EDM Operator

Location: Beachwood OH. (Climate-controlled facility)

Hours: 7am - 3:30pm

Pay: $20-$25/hour (paid weekly + eligible for overtime)

We manufacture precision ball screws and linear components for aerospace, medical, and defense. We need a Wire EDM operator who can set up, run, and monitor EDM machines independently, inspect their own work, and hold tight tolerances to print.

Hard Requirements

  • Experience operating and setting up Wire EDM machines, required
  • Must read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T
  • Must inspect your own work using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments
  • Able to troubleshoot process and machine issues without constant escalation
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Comfortable working with industrial fluids (coolants, dielectric fluid, oils)
  • Must be a U.S. person (citizen or lawful permanent resident) — required by U.S. export control law

What You'll Do

  • Set up Wire EDM machines to job specifications and engineering drawings
  • Monitor machining operations to ensure consistent quality and process adherence
  • Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy and conformance to print
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and identify issues before they affect output
  • Maintain a clean, organized, 5S-ready work area
  • Collaborate with engineering and production to resolve issues and optimize processes

Nice to Have

  • Background in AS9100, ISO 9001, or regulated environments (aerospace, medical, defense)
  • Experience with other precision machining processes
  • Technical certification or vocational training in machining or manufacturing

Who You Are

  • You don't pass work you wouldn't put your name on
  • You set up and run independently, you're not waiting to be walked through it
  • You communicate when something's off and help find the fix
  • You hold yourself to a standard even when no one's watching
  • You're looking for a place to build skills, not just fill a shift

What It's Like to Work Here

  • Climate-controlled facility, no harsh shop conditions
  • Exposure to advanced equipment: Wire EDM, Swiss CNC lathes, multi-axis mills, precision grinders
  • Team of machinists and engineers who take their work seriously
  • Consistent day shift, no rotating schedules
  • Your work goes into aerospace, defense, and medical systems, the parts you make matter, and we don't lose sight of that
  • We move with urgency, but we don't cut corners to get there
