Job description

Cable Design Engineer
Bloomington, MN | Long-Term Contract (No End Date) | $40.00-$55.00/hr | Onsite

The Cable Design Engineer is responsible for developing interconnect solutions for complex electronic and mechanical systems. This role focuses on creating cable assemblies, wiring interfaces, and system-level electrical interconnections that meet strict performance, safety, and quality requirements. The engineer works closely with systems, test, and hardware teams to interpret specifications, define connectivity needs, and translate requirements into manufacturable designs. This position also involves documentation development, peer review participation, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure accurate and reliable cable system integration. This is a permanent role on the team, being hired on a contracting basis.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Create and refine cable and electrical interconnection designs that meet functional, environmental, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Review designs for adherence to internal standards, industry guidelines, and customer specifications.
  • Analyze engineering requirements and vendor data to properly define system connections, routing needs, and cable architecture.
  • Communicate design intent clearly to designers and drafters to support accurate drawing creation.

Technical Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work with systems and test engineers to determine cable needs for platforms, subsystems, and test environments.
  • Support development of system documentation, including interface control documents, wiring diagrams, configuration specifications, and related materials.
  • Participate in internal and customer-facing design reviews to ensure compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Provide mentoring, technical guidance, and support to junior staff or cross-functional team members.

Quality, Planning & Execution

  • Review project documents for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with design requirements.
  • Estimate effort, track progress, and communicate status for assigned tasks and deliverables.
  • Raise concerns and resolve issues related to safety, quality, schedule, resource allocation, and cost.
  • Maintain strong focus on customer expectations while ensuring timely delivery of engineering outputs.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, or a minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience designing cables and wire harnesses for industrial or defense applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Electrical or Creo Cable is strongly preferred but not required.

Additional Requirements

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple parallel tasks.
  • Clear and confident written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with coworkers, suppliers, and customers.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. To be eligible for a security clearance, candidates must be U.S. citizens.
  • Willingness to continuously develop skills and maintain competency in relevant engineering tools.
  • Ability to maintain accurate project status across all active work.
