What is a wiper?

Wipers are entry-level crew members in the engine department of a ship. Their main responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining the engine room and machinery, assisting engineers with routine tasks, and ensuring that equipment is in good working order. Wipers often help with basic repairs and are expected to keep the engine spaces tidy and safe. This position is typically the first step for those pursuing a career in marine engineering or as a ship’s engineer. With experience and further training, wipers can advance to more specialized roles within the engine department.

What does a wiper do?

As a Wiper, you will be responsible for assisting with the general maintenance and cleanliness of the engine room and machinery spaces on a ship. Your daily tasks may include cleaning oil spills, wiping down equipment, helping with minor repairs, and supporting the engineers in monitoring machinery. The role is physically demanding and requires attention to safety procedures, as well as effective communication with the engineering team. Over time, performing these duties diligently can help you gain experience and qualify for advancement to higher positions within the engine department.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wiper?

To thrive as a Wiper, you need basic mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent; some maritime experience or training is often preferred. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, hand tools, and adherence to safety and environmental regulations is important, and completion of STCW Basic Safety Training may be required. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication help Wipers work efficiently within the engine room team. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and smooth operation of the vessel's engine department.
