Job Title: Crewperson 4 - Building Finishes

Position Function: The Crewperson 4 - Building Finishes is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the interior and exterior finishes of district facilities, with a primary emphasis on painting and surface finishing. This position performs a wide variety of painting, finishing, and building repair tasks including surface preparation, application of coatings, drywall and plaster repair, flooring finishes, ceiling repairs, door and hardware installation, and other general building maintenance activities. The employee is expected to demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, initiative, dependability, and the ability to perform quality work with minimal supervision.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

Painting and Surface Finishes (Primary Role)

• Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting through cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, priming, and masking.
• Apply paints, stains, varnishes, sealers, epoxies, and other protective coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
• Maintain and restore decorative and protective finishes on walls, ceilings, doors, windows, lockers, trim, masonry, metal surfaces, and other building components.
• Perform interior painting of classrooms, offices, corridors, gyms, cafeterias, and other occupied spaces while ensuring areas are clean and operational upon completion.
• Perform exterior painting of doors, window systems, siding, overhangs, fences, railings, gates, and other facility components.
• Refinish gymnasium and stage floors, apply athletic game lines, and maintain painted surfaces in athletic and playground areas.
• Layout and stripe parking lots, safety markings, traffic control markings, and other designated areas.
• Remove, repair, and cover graffiti on district property.
• Paint and maintain miscellaneous equipment and structures including flagpoles, safety rails, playground equipment, curbs, and safety zones.

• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of paint products, coatings, surface preparation methods, and application techniques.

Building Repair and Finishing Support

• Repair and finish drywall, plaster, and other wall systems to paint-ready condition.
• Repair and replace ceiling systems including T-bar, lay-in, glue-up, and specialty ceilings.
• Install and repair wood and metal stud framing systems.
• Install and repair wood and metal doors, frames, and associated hardware.
• Repair and replace ceramic tile, quarry tile, floor tile, and other finish materials.
• Utilize leveling and layout equipment to ensure accurate installation of finish materials.

• Assist with general building repair projects and facility improvement initiatives as assigned.

General Responsibilities

• Perform all work in a safe manner and report hazardous conditions immediately.
• Maintain required licenses, certifications, and knowledge of materials, equipment, and industry best practices.
• Maintain records and documentation necessary for efficient operation of the unit.
• Assist in maintaining positive public relations while representing the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools.
• Cooperate with other trades and departments to complete projects efficiently and professionally.
• Support district goals, department objectives, and customer service expectations.
• Participate in required training, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
• Perform mandatory snow removal and other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

• In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
• Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator
• All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position

Additional Duties: Assist with additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Equipment: The employee must demonstrate proficiency in the use of painting and building maintenance equipment, including but not limited to:

• Paint brushes, rollers, scrapers, and airless paint sprayers
• Pressure washers and surface preparation equipment
• Floor buffers, floor strippers, and line-marking equipment
• Hand tools and power tools common to the building trades
• Table saws, band saws, belt sanders, tile saws, brick saws, and mixers
• Ladders, scaffolding, genie lifts, and fall protection equipment
• Measuring, layout, and leveling devices
• Computers, tablets (iPads), and standard office equipment

Employees must comply with all district equipment-use guidelines and safety requirements.

Travel: Travel between schools and District offices will be required.

Physical and Mental Demands:

• Ability to perform all tasks and work the hours required
• Ability to work indoors in extreme heat or cold and outdoors in inclement weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow
• Ability to wear proper safety equipment as required while performing the various responsibilities required for this position
• Attendance at required meetings and in-services
• Daily schedule may fluctuate to accommodate deadlines and delivery of services
• Ability to work overtime on short notice may be required
• Work in standard office, shop and school building environments
• Ability to work in confined or high spaces; some strenuous physical work
• Ability to work productively in stressful situations
• Be able to read and work from blueprints and drawings
• Possess some general construction knowledge
• Be able to build and work from scaffolding
• Will be responsible to a crew leader when assigned
• Limited (0-1 hour): Sitting, crawling, lying down (back, side, front), keyboarding/mouse, and low impact vibratory tools (drilling/sanding)
• Occasional (1-3 hours): Below the waist reaching, kneeling and crouching (squatting)
• Frequent (3-6 hours): Waist to shoulder reaching, overhead reaching, standing, walking, climbing/balancing (stairs, ladders, other), rotation of head/neck, flexion (head bend down and head bend back), bending at the waist, twisting at the waist, forceful gripping, fine finger manipulation and repetitive motion (multiple manipulation of same muscle group)
• Constant (6-8 hours): Total reaching and handling/grasping
• Exposure to: Dust, odors, fumes, mists and chemicals (paint (latex, enamel), lacquer, varnish, paint thinners, will bond, solvents, brush wash, polyurethane finish and skim (paint remover)
• 01-10lbs (sedentary): frequent (3-6 hours) pushing/pulling; constant (6-8 hours) lifting and carrying
• 11-20lbs (light): occasional (1-3 hours) lifting and carrying; frequent (3-6 hours) pushing/pulling
• 21-50lbs (medium): limited (0-1 hour) lifting and carrying; occasional (1-3 hours) pushing/pulling
• 51-100lbs (heavy): limited (0-1 hour) lifting and carrying, pushing/pulling
• 100 lbs (very heavy): limited (0-1 hour) lifting and carrying, pushing/pulling

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Advanced knowledge of painting materials, coatings, finishes, and application methods.
• Knowledge of building repair materials, construction practices, and finish systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
• Ability to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
• Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work collaboratively as a team member and maintain positive customer relations.
• Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Outlook and Word.

Interrelations:

• Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
• Will work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks

• Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
• Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service

Qualification Profile:

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum three (3) years of painting, finishing, building maintenance, construction, or related experience preferred.
• Valid Kansas Driver's License required and must be maintained throughout employment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including asbestos training/licensing as applicable.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators.
• Must be willing to work second and/or third shift schedules as required.
