What is a wind tunnel instructor?

A Wind Tunnel Instructor is responsible for guiding and assisting individuals in indoor skydiving facilities, ensuring their safety while they experience free-fall simulation in a vertical wind tunnel. Instructors teach proper body positioning, provide pre-flight training, and offer hands-on support during flight sessions. They also monitor equipment, enforce safety protocols, and may perform demonstrations or advanced maneuvers. Strong communication skills, physical fitness, and a background in skydiving or bodyflight are often required for this role.

What does a wind tunnel instructor do?

As a Wind Tunnel Instructor, your day typically involves briefing customers on safety guidelines, demonstrating proper body positioning, and providing hands-on instruction both in and out of the wind tunnel. You’ll supervise flight sessions, monitor equipment, and offer personalized feedback to help participants improve their technique. Instructors also collaborate closely with other team members to maintain a safe environment and may assist with scheduling or routine maintenance checks. The role is highly interactive and physically engaging, making it ideal for those who enjoy teaching and working in dynamic settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wind tunnel instructor?

To thrive as a Wind Tunnel Instructor, you need a strong background in aerodynamics, physics, and experiential wind tunnel operation, often complemented by indoor skydiving or flight instruction certifications. Familiarity with safety harnesses, wind tunnel control systems, and emergency protocols is essential for this role. Exceptional communication, patience, and the ability to instruct and reassure participants make candidates stand out. These skills are crucial for ensuring a safe, positive, and educational experience for clients of all skill levels in a physically dynamic environment.
