How much do wildlife jobs pay per year?
What is a wildlife biologist?
What are different types of wildlife careers?
Different types of wildlife careers include being a zoologist, wildlife scientist, park ranger, nature preservation security officer, ornithologist, and marine biologist. The duties of these positions vary significantly. For example, nature preservation security staff who patrol a wildlife sanctuary directly confront poachers and help prevent them from violating the security of the park, sometimes using physical force. Zoologists study animals and their natural habitats to collect and analyze data as well as develop reports, papers, and policy recommendations for their preservation. Many wildlife positions include a mix of academic research and administrative responsibilities.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wildlife biologist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in wildlife conservation roles?
What is the difference between Wildlife vs Conservation Biologist?
| Aspect | Wildlife | Conservation Biologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Biology degree, fieldwork experience | Biology or environmental science degree, research skills |
| Work Environment | Wildlife reserves, parks, field sites | Research labs, field sites, policy settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Government agencies, NGOs, parks | Research institutions, NGOs, government agencies |
| Common Search & Comparison | Focuses on wildlife species and habitats | Focuses on protecting ecosystems and species conservation |
Wildlife professionals often work directly with animals and their habitats, conducting field research and monitoring populations. Conservation Biologists focus on developing strategies to protect and restore ecosystems, often combining research with policy advocacy. While both roles aim to preserve nature, Wildlife roles are more species-specific, whereas Conservation Biologists take a broader ecosystem approach.

Job description
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 11.5 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.Qualifications:Qualifications:
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 09/14/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. If you do not provide evidence that you possess the following selective factor(s), you will be rated not qualified. This position requires incumbent to carry non-Law Enforcement firearms in the backcountry and other park locations for invasive species control, native species diseases surveillance, and population control. Significant prior firearms experience hunting game birds and mid to large-sized mammals and have successfully completed a firearms safety course and have passed range qualifications within the last year is required. You must include the information on the completed firearms safety course and passed range qualifications within the last year in your resume.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
