Job description

HP107 System Administrator
The Solar Data Analysis Center (SDAC) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD is seeking a System Administrator to support computer systems for the STEREO Science Center (SSC), Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO), and the SOHO Experimenter's Operations/Analysis Facility (EOF/EAF). We are seeking a candidate with excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and within a team, and the drive to solve problems and master new techniques. The candidate must be able to come onsite to GSFC to physically work on hardware systems such as servers and tape libraries.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform minor and major upgrades of operating system software on Linux servers and desktop computers.
  • Interact with GSFC network personnel to resolve problems related to DNS, routing, firewalls, and planned outages.
  • Patch, upgrade, and configure software and operating systems to comply with GSFC IT security policies.
  • Port software between different platforms and operating systems.
  • Install application software and computer hardware.
  • Diagnose and resolve computer and networking issues for local and remote users.
  • Execute and manage system backups.
  • Automate routine administration processes to improve efficiency.
  • Create documentation on tasks and procedures to be shared with SDAC personal (e.g. SharePoint, Wiki entries).
  • Manage and monitor science data transfer mechanisms to transfer data to AWS, other on-premises systems, and an offline tape storage system.

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor's or associate's degree in computer science and five to ten years employment as a systems administrator, or equivalent work experience.
  • RedHat/Oracle Linux and Debian systems administration.
  • Understanding of DNS, firewalls, and TCP/IP network administration.
  • Maintaining network backups of multiple systems.
  • RAID configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Basic computer hardware maintenance (e.g., drives and fan replacement).
  • Basic manipulation of public/private keys.
  • AWS cloud experience, including S3 bucket management and data transfer/upload.
  • Evidence of continuing education/certification in IT topics.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Investigation through NASA is required.

Desired Experience:
  • Understanding tape library systems and tape maintenance.
  • Apache2 + ModSecurity + SSL.
  • PIV / Smart Card Authentication.
  • System monitoring and management tools (e.g., Puppet, Nagios, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Maintaining a network log host for multiple systems.
  • Postfix + Dovecot +SSL.
  • Perl, Python, and shell scripting languages.
  • C and Interactive Data Language (IDL) programming languages.
  • NetApp, Dell (iDrac PowerVault), and Spectralogic systems administration.
