What is a whip in a parliamentary or legislative context?

In parliamentary or legislative settings, whips are officials whose main responsibility is to maintain party discipline among members of a legislature. They ensure that members attend important votes and adhere to the official party line when voting on legislation. Whips also serve as a communication link between party leadership and rank-and-file members, relaying information about upcoming votes and gauging support for bills.
