How much do welding mt jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for welding mt in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by welding MTs, and how can they be managed on the job?

Welding MTs (Maintenance Technicians) often encounter challenges such as working in confined or elevated spaces, managing heavy equipment, and adhering to strict safety protocols. They must also troubleshoot and repair a variety of welding machinery, which requires both technical expertise and adaptability. Effective communication with other maintenance staff and production teams is essential for minimizing downtime and ensuring all repairs meet quality standards. Staying up-to-date with industry safety regulations and ongoing training helps Welding MTs manage these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a welding MT?

To thrive as a Welding Maintenance Technician, you need expertise in welding techniques, equipment repair, metal fabrication, and typically a vocational certification or associate degree in welding or industrial maintenance. Familiarity with welding machines, diagnostic tools, safety protocols, and, in many cases, certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) are important for the role. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help technicians efficiently address equipment issues and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure the safety, reliability, and productivity of industrial operations that depend on well-maintained welding equipment.

What is the difference between Welding Mt vs Welding Fabricator?

AspectWelding MtWelding Fabricator
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS)Welding certifications often required
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, industrial plantsManufacturing shops, fabrication facilities
Job FocusPerforming welds on structuresAssembling and fabricating metal components
Industry UsageConstruction, heavy industryManufacturing, metalwork

Welding Mt primarily focuses on performing welds on large structures, often in construction or industrial settings. Welding Fabricators, on the other hand, are involved in assembling and fabricating metal parts in manufacturing environments. While both roles require welding certifications and involve working with metals, Welding Mt emphasizes fieldwork on structures, whereas Welding Fabricators work mainly in shops creating components.

What is a welding MT?

Welding MTs, or Magnetic Particle Testing welders, are professionals who use magnetic particle inspection methods to detect surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials, such as steel welds. This non-destructive testing (NDT) technique is commonly used in the welding industry to ensure the integrity and quality of welds. Welding MTs apply magnetic fields and iron particles to the weld area to reveal cracks, pores, or other defects that could affect performance or safety. Their work is essential for maintaining safety standards in industries like construction, manufacturing, and transportation.
