A welder helper, also known as a welder assistant, provides support to the welder during active work on a project. The welder helper performs duties that do not require as much skill as a welder, such as handing materials to the welder, cleaning the work area, and moving equipment. A welder helper is a vital part of the welding process. They are responsible for finishing the weld by grinding or brushing the area to remove any excess metal or impurities, looking out for the safety of the welder, and identifying any dangers or flaws in the work.
| Aspect | Welder Helper | Welder |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | None typically required; some may have OSHA or safety training | Often requires AWS or other welding certifications |
| Work Environment | Assist in fabrication shops, construction sites, industrial settings | Perform welding in similar environments, often working independently or with a team |
| Job Responsibilities | Assist with setup, hold materials, clean welds, support welders | Perform actual welding, inspect welds, ensure quality standards |
The main difference between a Welder Helper and a Welder is that the helper assists with supporting tasks and preparation, while the welder performs the actual welding work. Both roles often work in similar environments and may require safety training, but welders typically need specific certifications and skills to execute welding tasks independently.

This 2nd shift Welder role focuses on .045 MIG production welding on mild steel in the flat position within a clean, organized, and well-equipped fabrication shop. You will primarily perform MIG welding using Lincoln welders, work from blueprints, and support minor fabrication tasks while contributing to a collaborative and safety-focused team environment.
ResponsibilitiesYou will work in a clean, organized, and modern facility that invests in both your tools and your growth. The company offers strong insurance and benefits, including a health plan that can be free, and provides top-tier welding hoods for welders. You will receive a 90-day review and annual reviews, with merit increases based entirely on individual performance rather than across-the-board adjustments, creating real rewards for skill and communication. The culture emphasizes inclusivity and actively listens to employee feedback, with paid lunches and breaks when you stay onsite. A shift premium for 2nd shift, product discounts, and opportunities to grow into more TIG work and other roles across a global organization further enhance your long-term career prospects.
Work EnvironmentThe shop is a very clean and organized facility with high ceilings and a structured layout that includes three different weld groups and twelve bays. You will primarily work on 2nd shift, from 2:45 pm to 11:45 pm, with a standard schedule focused on five hours of overtime availability each week, though additional overtime is not currently required. A small, set crew occasionally works on Saturdays for a few hours. The facility does not have air conditioning in the summer, and the doors remain open, so it can get hot during warmer months; to support employees, the company provides items such as Gatorade and ice cream. The shop has approximately 55–60 employees, creating a mid-sized, collaborative environment. You will use Lincoln welders and standard fabrication equipment, and the dress code requires appropriate personal protective equipment, including steel-toe footwear, a welding helmet, and welding gloves.
