Weld Tester information

What is a weld tester?

Weld testers are professionals who inspect and evaluate the quality and integrity of welds in metal structures and components. They use various methods such as visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, and other non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques to ensure welds meet safety and quality standards. Their work is crucial in industries like construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas to prevent structural failures and maintain compliance with regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weld tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weld Tester, you need a solid understanding of welding processes, metallurgy, and inspection standards, often supported by relevant technical certifications such as AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). Proficiency with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, and magnetic particle testing equipment is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are important soft skills for accurate assessments and clear reporting. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure weld quality, safety compliance, and the structural integrity of fabricated components.

What are some common challenges a weld tester might face on the job, and how can they overcome them?

Weld Testers often encounter challenges such as identifying subtle defects in welds, working in difficult or confined spaces, and ensuring compliance with strict safety and quality standards. Staying up-to-date with the latest testing methods and industry codes helps address these issues. Effective communication with welders and engineers is also essential for resolving discrepancies and maintaining workflow efficiency. Building strong attention to detail and continually honing technical skills are key to overcoming these challenges and excelling in the role.

What is the difference between Weld Tester vs Welding Inspector?

AspectWeld TesterWelding Inspector
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Welder)Welding inspector certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Welding Inspector)
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, fabrication shops, testing facilitiesConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, inspection sites
Job FocusTesting welds for quality and complianceInspecting welds for adherence to codes and standards
Employer & IndustryManufacturers, testing labs, fabrication companiesConstruction firms, inspection agencies, industrial plants

While both Weld Testers and Welding Inspectors work with welds, Weld Testers primarily focus on testing and evaluating weld quality through various methods, whereas Welding Inspectors assess welds on-site to ensure compliance with safety standards and codes. Both roles require related certifications and are essential in ensuring weld integrity in different stages of the manufacturing or construction process.

How to become a weld tester?

To become a weld tester, you typically need to complete a welding training program and obtain relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent. Experience in welding and knowledge of inspection techniques are also important, and some positions require a high school diploma or equivalent. Continuous training and staying current with industry standards are essential for career advancement.

Job description

Epic Piping has an exciting opportunity available for a Drafter to be an integral part of our engineering team. This position is at our corporate location in Baton Rouge.

Position Summary:

Develop accurate, fabrication-ready pipe spool drawings from client isometrics, specifications, and project requirements. Coordinate assigned spools through detailing, checking, audit, and release so fabrication shops receive complete instructions on schedule.

Essential Functions:

  • Review client isometrics, project scope, specifications, line data, and applicable fabrication requirements before beginning assigned work.
  • Produce clear, accurate pipe spool drawings using AutoCAD and other approved department tools.
  • Break piping systems into practical fabrication and shipping spools, considering shop capability, field installation, handling, and trailer limits of approximately 8 ft 8 ft 40 ft.
  • Apply client standards and project requirements for dimensions, materials, welds, supports, attachments, testing, heat treatment, coating, and nondestructive examination.
  • Perform required geometry, trigonometry, dimensional, and material takeoff calculations and verify results before submission.
  • Prepare drawings for independent checking; resolve checker and audit comments promptly and document revisions accurately.
  • Maintain drawing status, priorities, and required records in the department's document-control and production systems.
  • Release only complete, approved spool packages and communicate holds, missing information, scope conflicts, and schedule risks to the appropriate lead or manager.
  • Support fabrication shops by answering drawing-related questions, incorporating approved changes, and protecting revision traceability.
  • Meet assigned quality and throughput expectations while balancing accuracy, priority, and timely spool release.

Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical drafting, CAD, pipefitting, welding, or fabrication training preferred.
  • One or more years of piping, mechanical drafting, pipe fabrication, pipefitting, welding, or closely related experience preferred. Relevant shop experience may substitute for formal drafting experience.
  • AutoCAD; Autodesk Plant 3D or other approved spool-detailing software as assigned
  • Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Electronic document-control and workflow systems, including JD Edwards when assigned
  • Spoolgen or comparable software is beneficial but not required
  • Working knowledge of piping components, materials, weld types, fabrication practices, and drawing conventions.
  • Ability to read and interpret client isometrics, specifications, line lists, details, and related project documents.
  • Familiarity with applicable ASTM, ASME, PFI, client, and company requirements appropriate to assigned work.
  • General understanding of material grades, nondestructive examination, heat treatment, coating, and welding requirements.
  • Good geometry, trigonometry, dimensional-control, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, protect revision control, and distinguish drafting responsibilities from engineering decisions.
  • Ability to work extended schedules when required to support project and fabrication priorities.

 WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Competitive insurance and benefit options
  • Company-paid life insurance and long-term disability insurance
  • Paid vacation and holiday time
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) plans available (50% company match up to 6% contributed by the employee)
  • A supportive and collaborative work environment where you are encouraged to share your ideas and contribute to our shared goals.
