Incumbent serves as Weights and Measures Inspector for Boone County Weights and Measures department, responsible for inspecting, weighing, and measuring devices used for sale of goods, and enforcing standards established by State of Indiana. Examples of Duties Conducts periodic on-site inspections and testing of weighing, measuring, and timing devices of businesses selling commodities or services by weight, measure, volume, or time, including, but not limited to, gas stations, grocery stores, hardware stores, school cafeterias, and grain elevators. Affixes approved seal to equipment as appropriate.

Conducts follow-up inspections as desired, ensuring proper resolution of violations and taking additional action as situations demand, including removing items in violation from shelves, confiscating equipment, or closing businesses. Performs representative sample checks of pre-packaged goods, including weighing packages to verify reported weight and tare allowances, and reviewing labels to ensure complete and accurate compliance with labeling codes. Monitors new establishments and/or additions of weighing and measuring devices to established businesses, ensuring proper registration, initial inspections, and updating department records to ensure proper monitoring.

Responds to complaints and inspection requests from members of the public, evaluating problems and conducting inspections when necessary to verify violations. Assists State with octane testing, including collecting samples, picking target stations, and answering complaints. Maintains various records and files, including vehicle fuel, maintenance, and mileage records, and inspection and violation records.

Monitors inventory of office supplies, ordering and/or purchasing as needed. Prepares and submits a variety of required reports to Commissioners and State of Indiana. Attends meetings, seminars, and training sessions to review changes in applicable laws and regulations, and receiving training for new testing or inspection equipment and techniques.

Prepares and presents public presentations as requested. Performs related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications High school diploma or GED.

Possession of state certification as weights and measures inspector, or ability to obtain required certification within the specified time. Thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and local rules and regulations governing use and maintenance of weighing and measuring devices, and ability to properly enforce governing laws. Thorough knowledge of the appropriate use and maintenance of a variety of electronic, manual, or computerized measuring and testing devices, and ability to perform appropriate inspection and testing duties and performing arithmetic calculations.

Working knowledge of County geography and ability to plan and layout assigned work. Knowledge of budget preparations and administration, and ability to prepare and maintain numerous reports, logs, and documents. Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare various reports as required.

Ability to properly operate a variety of standard office/department equipment, including telephone, typewriter, copier, calculator, pager, and vehicle. Ability understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions, and present findings in oral or written form. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, state personnel, business owners, and members of the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace and personal conduct. Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality to department information and records according to state requirements. Ability to work alone with minimum supervision.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record. Supplemental Information DIFFICULTY OF WORK: Incumbent=s inspection duties are governed by specific legal guidelines and technical specifications, and are broad in scope and variety, requiring analysis and specific situations to determine the most appropriate actions or conclusions. Duties require consideration of many variables.

RESPONSIBILITY: Incumbent performs duties independently, ensuring inspection deadlines are properly met and referring cases that require legal action or interstate involvement to all required departments or agencies. Duties have a significant impact on County business owners and employees, and members of the public. Work is reviewed for compliance with legal requirements.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, state personnel, business owners, and members of the public for purposes of conducting inspections and investigating complaints to ensure proper compliance with applicable regulations. Incumbent reports directly to the State Administrator of Weights and Measures and/or County Commissioners. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbent performs duties both in an office environment and in the field, requiring lifting of heavy equipment weighing more than 50 pounds, tanks, and weights, and exposure to gasoline fumes, dust, dirt, and inclement weather conditions.

Incumbent may be exposed to irate or otherwise uncooperative individuals. Incumbent occasionally works extended and/or evening hours, and occasionally travels out of town for meetings and training, sometimes overnight. ADA Compliance Physical Ability Tasks require the ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (1-50 pounds).

Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions will be conducted indoors and in the health department location however it may require exposure to the outdoor elements including humidity, rain, and extreme temperatures.
