Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
The purpose of this position is to tutor writers of all levels and disciplines, individually and in small groups, in a variety of writing assignments and projects in face-to-face and online environments.
Professional writing tutors design digital and print instructional resources and create and facilitate interactive workshops.
Tutors also contribute to Stone Writing Center's social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook and blog). Tutors will help supervise Students Assistants.
This position requires on-campus hours and/or online, remote hours as assigned to meet students' needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Level II (PSTWCEMPTH18) - Bachelor's Degree in English or related field.
Level III (PSTWCEMPTH20) - Bachelor's Degree in English or related field
One (1) year teaching or tutoring experience at college level
One (1) year supervisory experience
Knowledge of learning management systems
One (1) year working at Del Mar College
Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Solid academic standing and strong writing abilities.
• Strong commitment to helping other students become more effective writers.
• Experience working with students from different cultural backgrounds, with students of all levels of ability, or with students who have special disabilities.
• Knowledge of documentation styles, including MLA and APA.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word.
• Advanced communication skills to articulate appropriate suggestions for writing improvement.
• Knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
Level II:
• One year teaching or tutoring experience.
• One year of supervisory experience.
• Experience with social media such as Twitter and blogs.
• Experience with online tutoring or teaching.
• Knowledge of learning management systems (preferably Canvas).
• Experience using mobile devices in educational settings.
• Ability to work independently and to take initiative in fulfilling responsibilities
Level III:
• Master's degree in English or closely-related field
• Experience with social media such as Twitter and blogs
• Experience with online tutoring or teaching

Conduct one-on-one writing consultations with students on campus or in an online environment.

Assist students in interpreting an assignment sheet, talking through ideas for a paper, discussing course readings, or planning for a paper.
Encourage students to consider appropriate choices regarding audience, focus, purpose, reasoning, and organization.

Enable students to acquire research strategies, integrate scholarly sources, and apply proper documentation (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago).
Help students strengthen editing skills, choose appropriate vocabulary, and apply technical conventions of academic writing.

Interact with students from different cultural backgrounds and with students who speak English as a second language.
Work effectively with students of all levels of ability, including students who need accommodations.

Conduct small group tutorials.

Market the Stone Writing Center through classroom visits and other activities.
Maintain Stone Writing Center as a welcoming space for all.

Assist the Director and Assistant Instructors with administrative tasks and special projects, as needed.
