What does a weekend vet assistant do?

A Weekend Vet Assistant helps veterinarians and veterinary technicians care for animals, primarily during weekends. Their duties often include feeding and exercising animals, cleaning kennels and exam rooms, assisting with basic medical procedures, and supporting pet owners. They play an essential role in maintaining a clean and safe environment for both animals and staff, especially when regular weekday staff may not be present. Weekend Vet Assistants need to be comfortable handling a variety of animals and may also help with administrative tasks like scheduling and record keeping.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend vet assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Vet Assistant, you need basic animal care knowledge, attention to detail, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software and basic medical equipment is often required. Compassion, strong communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the safety and well-being of animals, efficient clinic operations, and positive experiences for both clients and veterinary teams during busy weekend shifts.

Employer & Industry UsageVeterinary clinics, animal hospitalsVeterinary clinics, animal hospitals, shelters
Search & Comparison IntentOften searched for weekend-specific rolesBroader part-time roles, including weekends

Weekend Vet Assistants primarily work during weekends, focusing on supporting veterinary staff during busy or off-hours. Part-Time Vet Assistants may work flexible hours, including weekends, but are not limited to weekend shifts. Both roles require similar credentials and work in similar environments, but the key difference lies in scheduling and availability.

Where do weekend vet assistants make the most money?

Weekend vet assistants tend to earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for veterinary services, such as urban or affluent areas. Salaries can also vary based on experience, certifications, and the size of the veterinary practice, with larger clinics often offering higher pay for weekend shifts.

How many hours a week does a weekend vet assistant work?

A weekend vet assistant typically works around 8 to 20 hours per week, primarily on weekends such as Saturday and Sunday. The schedule can vary depending on the employer and clinic needs, with some positions offering part-time hours and others requiring additional shifts during holidays or busy periods.

What typical responsibilities can a weekend vet assistant expect during a shift?

As a Weekend Vet Assistant, you can expect to assist veterinarians and technicians with animal handling, preparing exam rooms, monitoring hospitalized pets, and maintaining cleanliness throughout the clinic. Since weekends often have fewer staff and increased emergency visits, you'll likely manage a variety of tasks, from restraining animals for exams to updating medical records and communicating with pet owners. Flexibility and strong teamwork skills are essential, as you'll often step in to help where needed to ensure smooth clinic operations during busy weekend hours.

Can I be a weekend vet assistant with no experience?

Weekend vet assistants typically do not require prior experience, as many entry-level positions provide on-the-job training. Basic skills such as animal handling and communication are helpful, but employers often hire individuals willing to learn and may require a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification is not usually mandatory for entry-level roles but can improve job prospects.

Job description

Are you a veterinary assistant or newly licensed LVT (1-2 years) with solid experience ready to dive into specialty medicine? Olympic Veterinary Cardiology is seeking a dynamic, detail-obsessed, and heart-forward individual to join our fast-paced, three (soon to be four)-cardiologist team. Full- or part-time positions are available.

We’re not your average vEt practice. We’re independently owned, mobile-savvy, and deeply committed to cardiac care for pets across the greater Seattle and Everett area. When a pet parent hears ‘heart disease,’ it’s scary. We’re here to bring clarity, compassion, and a plan—and we need your help to do it.

What You’ll Do

This hybrid role splits time between our outpatient center and mobile service. You’ll be the right hand to our doctor’s, helping deliver top-tier care with precision and empathy.

Mobile Duties

  • Drive to partner hospitals (company vehicle provided)
  • Set up and break down equipment
  • Handle and restrain animals safely
  • Coordinate mobile routes and hospital teams
  • Communicate with clients and hospitals via phone/email
  • Keep the day running smoothly

Clinic Duties

  • Engage with clients and gather patient histories (grammar nerds welcome!)
  • Assist in surgery and pack room (sterility knowledge required)
  • Operate C-arm (we’ll train you!)
  • Collect samples and perform basic lab work
  • Take radiographs
  • Share cleaning duties
  • Communicate with clients professionally

Who You Are

  • Graduate of a vet asistant program or trained in-house with ideally 1+ year of clinical experience or a newly licensed (within 1-2 years) Veterinary Technician
  • Skilled in identifying distressed or anxious animals
  • Master of multitsking, resource management, and client communication
  • Tech-savvy with Word, Excel, Outlook, and eager to learn new systems
  • Obsessed with details, accuracy, and creating order from chaos
  • Passionate about changing the game in veterinary medicine

Bonus Traits

  • You love puzzles and thrive in dynamic environments
  • You’re empathetic, proactive, and a natural problem-solver
  • You believe in extreme ownership and no drama
  • You’re not afraid to challenge outdated processes and raise the bar

The Fine Print

  • Must have a clean driving record
  • Comfortable with both in-person and virtual meetings
  • Able to coordinate schedules, manage patient records, and ensure smooth operations

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $20-$27 per hour (depending on experience and level), based on a 4-day, 10-hour schedule. Overtime stipend available for 5-day weeks. Our business hours are 7:30am to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday and team members may be scheduled any 4 days in the week.

Benefits:

  • Health Insurance (HSA option)
  • Vision & Dental
  • Retirement Plan (up to 8% match!)
  • Disability Insurance (Short & Long Term)
  • Identity Theft Protection
  • Financial Planning Access
  • College Savings Plan for Dependents
  • Paid Time Off & WA-Compliant Sick Leave
  • Profit Sharing (when goals are met)
