What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in weekend tree work?

To thrive in Weekend Tree Work, you need a solid understanding of tree biology, safe cutting techniques, and physical fitness, often supported by experience or training in arboriculture. Familiarity with chainsaws, climbing gear, wood chippers, and safety equipment is typically required, and certifications like OSHA safety training or ISA Tree Worker may be preferred. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help individuals excel, especially when coordinating with clients or crewmates in dynamic outdoor environments. These skills are crucial to ensure safe, efficient tree maintenance and removal while minimizing risks and meeting customer expectations.

What is the difference between Weekend Tree Work vs Arborist?

Weekend Tree Work generally involves casual or part-time tree-related tasks, often on weekends without formal certifications. In contrast, an Arborist is a trained professional with certifications, performing comprehensive tree care services. While both work outdoors in similar environments, Arborists typically have more specialized skills and work full-time in the industry.

What is weekend tree work?

Weekend tree work refers to tree care and maintenance services that are performed on weekends, often to accommodate clients who are unavailable during the week. These tasks can include pruning, trimming, tree removal, stump grinding, and emergency tree services. Many homeowners and property managers choose weekend tree work for convenience, and professional arborists or tree service companies often offer flexible scheduling to meet these needs. Safety and proper equipment are essential, so it's important to hire qualified professionals for any significant tree work.

What are some typical challenges faced during weekend tree work and how can they be managed?

Weekend tree work often involves working in varied weather conditions and sometimes with limited daylight, which can make tasks more challenging. Additionally, coordinating with clients who are only available on weekends may require flexibility and strong communication skills. Safety is always a priority, so being vigilant about using proper equipment and following protocols is essential. Working in a team helps manage these challenges, as team members can support each other and share expertise. Planning ahead and conducting thorough site assessments before starting work can also help ensure efficiency and safety.

Job description

As an Urban Forest Arborist (UFA) at A Plus Tree, you will play a key role in supporting the sales efforts of the regional Urban Forest Manager (UFM), acting as a selling arborist and trusted client advisor. This position blends arboricultural expertise with business development skills to drive both short- and long-term growth targets in your territory. Our clients range from single-family homeowners to managers of expansive commercial, municipal, and institutional properties - offering opportunities to have a lasting impact on significant portions of the urban tree canopy as well as on individual landscapes. You'll assist the UFM in building client relationships, preparing proposals, and conducting tree inventories, assessments, and risk evaluations in accordance with ISA and ANSI A300 standards. Your responsibilities will range from site walks and tree health evaluations to proposal development and operational coordination - ensuring a seamless client experience from first contact to project completion. By combining technical skill with exceptional customer service, you will help establish the foundation for sustainable, profitable growth while promoting best practices in urban forest management.
Responsibilities
Sales & Client Support

  • Partner with the UFM to prepare proposals, send estimates, and implement sales strategies aligned with territory growth goals.
  • Follow up with customers on proposals, active jobs, and account management activities to ensure satisfaction and retention.
  • Maintain accurate client and property data, updating company software and Outlook calendars with new accounts, properties, and scheduled events.
  • Assist the UFM with marketing campaigns, distributing materials, and participating in outreach to generate new business opportunities.
Arboricultural Consulting & Site Assessments
  • Conduct property walks using proprietary software to identify tree species, evaluate tree health and structure, and recommend treatments in line with ISA and ANSI A300 guidelines.
  • Consult with clients on pruning, trimming, shaping, reduction, and removal of trees, as well as plant health care and general tree care solutions.
  • Perform tree inventories and catalog data using company software, documenting species, size, condition, and risk factors.
  • Prepare permit applications, arborist reports, and supporting documentation for municipal and client approval.
Job Planning & Operational Coordination
  • Collaborate with Operations Managers, Project Coordinators, Crew Leaders, Climbers, and Grounds Persons to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution.
  • Complete pre- and post-job walkthroughs with clients to confirm scope completion and quality standards.
  • Coordinate job site logistics, including marking stumps for 811 and submitting dig tickets, setting up "No Parking" zones in advance of work, and identifying chip drop locations for debris recycling.
Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with ISA best practices, ANSI A300 standards, and all local and state regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing training and continuing education to maintain ISA certification and other relevant licenses.
Qualifications
  • ISA Certified Arborist (required)
  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) preferred, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Two- or four-year degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Science, Environmental Science, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in arboriculture, tree care sales, or related field service work.
  • Proven ability to identify regional tree species and diagnose pests, diseases, and abiotic stress factors.
  • Strong proposal preparation, presentation, and client communication skills, with a track record of building long-term customer relationships.
  • Proficiency with tree inventory software, GIS tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and CRM systems.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing schedules and client needs.
  • Physically capable of performing site visits, walking on uneven terrain, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Why Join A Plus Tree?
  • Work for a company that values science-based tree care, safety, and community impact.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package.
  • Company-provided training, continuing education, and professional development opportunities, including support for ISA CEUs.
  • A collaborative, safety-first culture with clear career growth pathways.
