The Danbury Public Schools serve a diverse community of nearly 12,000 students, with over 45 spoken languages and a variety of ethnicities. The Danbury Public School District is looking for speakers fluent in Spanish, Portugese or other languages to serve as interpreters and translators during meetings with parents, guardians, and other visitors and stakeholders across the District, and to provide accurate translations of written materials for distribution. Successful candidates shall demonstrate fluency, proficiency, and accuracy in translating between English and a second language orally and in writing. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and to maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times under a variety of circumstances. Available assignments for interpreter/translators will be posted daily for successful candidates to select in keeping with personal schedules.
Terms of Employment: As needed, generally for assignments during the student day, in keeping with the District school year calendar. Evening assignments during conference weeks and summer school vacancies also available, as desired.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required, Associates Degree or college experience preferred;
Demonstrated oral/written proficiency in English and a second language, Spanish and/or Portuguese preferred;
Ability to verbally translate spoken material from English into a designated second language and/or from a designated second language into English;
Effective communication skills;
Commitment to highest levels of confidentiality, discretion and professionalism
Job Functions:
Provide interpreting/translating services in a variety of settings that range from small to large group settings and alternative settings including during telephone/conference calls;
Prepare written translations of instructional and educational materials, correspondence, and forms from one language to another for both individual and district-wide distribution;
Assist school staff with parent conferences, communicating with non-English- speaking parents, and making home visits as requested.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
Hourly rate of $20/hour. No additional benefits.
All interpreter/translators report to the Coordinator of ELL and World Language/Director of the ESL Center or his designee.
