What is a weekend trainee ROV pilot technician?

A Weekend Trainee ROV Pilot Technician is an entry-level professional who assists in operating and maintaining remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) used for underwater tasks, often in the offshore oil, gas, or renewable energy sectors. They work primarily on weekends, learning to control ROVs, perform basic repairs, and support experienced technicians during subsea operations. This role serves as a training position, providing hands-on experience and technical knowledge for those aspiring to become fully qualified ROV pilots or technicians. Candidates typically receive supervision and instruction while gradually taking on more responsibilities as they gain experience.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a weekend trainee ROV pilot technician?

As a Weekend Trainee ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Pilot Technician, your main responsibilities include assisting in the launch, operation, and recovery of ROVs, performing basic maintenance, and supporting senior pilots with troubleshooting. A common challenge is adapting quickly to the technical and safety demands of offshore or underwater environments, often requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. You'll typically work in a small, collaborative team, where clear communication and willingness to learn are crucial. Effective teamwork, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help individuals excel in high-pressure offshore environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient operation and maintenance of ROVs, which is critical for successful underwater missions and crew safety.

  • Support integration of UAS data feeds with CUSTOMER command-and-control infrastructure, including live video distribution via VIDTERRA and TAK.
  • Conduct interoperability testing with CUSTOMER IT staff prior to each event to validate connectivity, video distribution, and system integration.
  • Participate in protective advance planning meetings, pre-event briefings, and post-event debriefings with CUSTOMER stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of flight operations, incident logs, daily operational reports, and after-action inputs; keep FAA Part 107 and platform-specific certification/training records available for CUSTOMER inspection.
  • Complete government-provided CUSTOMER Basic Operator Course, EUAS Policy course, and platform-specific certifications as required.
  • Adhere to all CUSTOMER security protocols, information-handling requirements, and federal cybersecurity standards.
  • When not deployed on active missions, work from the National Capital Region (NCR) facility to service, maintain, and store equipment and complete required CUSTOMER training.
