Job description

Development Engineering Technician

The Development Engineering Technician at Redwood Materials supports research and pilot-scale operations by executing laboratory and manufacturing experiments that drive the development of new equipment, process flowsheets, and sustainable products. This role is responsible for building and maintaining lab and pilot equipment, preparing solutions, conducting wet-chemistry bench experiments, and powder handling, and mechanical analyses. The technician monitors and troubleshoots experiments in both lab and high-volume production environments while supporting the development and validation of new metrology systems. Success in this position requires strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on laboratory experience, attention to safety, and the ability to follow detailed technical procedures in fast-paced conditions. The ideal candidate is organized, technically skilled, safety-conscious, and motivated by a passion for sustainability and innovation.

Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Friday

Responsibilities will Include:

  • Build and maintain pilot and lab equipment
  • Prepare solutions and conduct wet-chemistry bench experiments
  • Perform chemical analyses, optical measurements, and mechanical tests
  • Run and monitor experiments in high volume manufacturing and in a fast-paced environment
  • Support the development of new metrology systems and prove their capabilities
  • Hands on experience building complex mechanical systems
  • Laboratory experience in wet-chemistry and bench top experiments

Desired Qualifications:

  • Associates or bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Work performed in varied indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to hazardous materials and challenging conditions (noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes) while wearing required PPE for extended periods
  • Ability to follow and apply established procedures, work instructions, and safety requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, shifting priorities, and competing deadlines in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Mechanical design and fabrication experience
  • Hands on experience building complex mechanical systems
  • Laboratory experience in wet-chemistry and bench top experiments
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Organization and documentation skills
  • Travel required as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
  • Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards

Working Conditions:

  • Split work environment between office and the production facility
  • Work may involve extended periods of working in the production facility
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
  • May require occasional work weekends or alternate shifts to support production needs
